I have a Nissan Patrol 2003 3.0l diesel/auto and it has a problem of slightly higher revs when running first time for the day. I typically run it for about 4 kms at 60kms/hr then hit the highway at this point temp gauge is at normal running point on gauge, then when travelling along the highway at 100k/hr it will be sitting on approx 2500-2600 RPMs and then after travelling 8-10 Kms total and a total run time of about approx 10mins the RPMs will drop to apprx 2100-2200. It seems to be slightly worse in winter. My mate has the same model engine auto etc and does not have the problem. I have had it into the dealer and he says they did all the checks on the tranny and said it was all Ok and was because it was winter and the engine takes along time to warm up. Could this be a Engine management system fault, cold start solenoid/switch problem, Vacuum or is the converter locking up, either way it seems like a problem to me.

I have had the 4WD since new and other than this it has been great.

I am looking for advice or if someone has had similar problems

Thanks

AlRob

I know that a skyline is not the same vehicle but I had a similar issue and it appeared the torque converter wouldn't go into lockup until it reached running temp. The behavior of your auto seems similar and appears normal. I would talk to an automatic transmission specialist.

It is probably the Torque converter lockup not activating till the trans fluid has reached operating temperature.
I'm not that familiar with patrols but does it have a seperate ATF cooler?
If it does try placing a piece of cardboard to block the airflow and see if it comes on quicker. Your mate might travel further and the fluid is hotter before he gets to the freeway or he may drive harder or different bullbars or accessories change the airflow.
Some auto's may take 20k's to warm up to running temp in cooler weather, some also have tempt and pressure switches to regulate flow through the cooler to ensure the fluid stays above a certain temp.

Sounds like some form of fault with the overdrive as I have a 5 speed manual 3.0ltr Patrol and at 100k per hour the revs are 2600 and i know that for the autos with the overdrive it sits around the 2200mark. It sounds like the 5 gear overdrive is not coming in for some reason. It should not have to get to a certain temp for this to occur. AS you highlighted your mate has no issues and I have never known of any other car to not go into the overdive gear just because it was colder than it should be. It is definately not normal.I wish Nissan had put a six speed on the manuals as its frustrating to have to sit only just 100klm per hour to keep the revs at reasonable level that lets the car relax along. If I want to sit on 110 I have to sit the revs on 2900 and its just annoying

Thanks, I might have a look at doing an experiment to slow the air flow to the cooler just to see if it changes the time frame by warming up quicker. If it does I will know that it is only a oil temp issue.

Thanks

As said before Skylines used to take at least 5 k's to change into overdrive when cold in winter. I owned one from new.

Tied in with the same point it could also be a slow temp sensor or pressure valve, nothing to get too concerned about.
When I say pressure valve some manufacturers put a pressure valve in the cooling loop so that until the ATF reaches a preset temp (and the pressure drops as it heat up) the cooler may be bypassed completely.

As others have suggested it is most likely to be the torque converter lockup not activating until it is up to temp. The 3 litre auto is not a 5 speed box so it is nothing to do with the 5th gear selection.
I have noticed this in mine but not to the extend you have reported. I don't think you have a problem realy.

HI, Quite normal for the symptom you are explaining to happen, the converter will not lock up until the transmission is at operating temperature, mine does exactly what you are saying at the same revs and much the same distances, have talked to an auto guru about it and he says it is quite normal, the times and distances may change a bit due to driver operation, absolutly nothing to worry about.
Cheers Rossco.

Thanks for the respose, it is good to know that it is a normal part of the warm up cycle and running of the Patrol.

Ditto to the comments by Rossco - need to warm up before it drops into overdrive.

Thanks, It does drop into overdrive, becsuase if you turn the O/D off it jumps up to apprx 2700 rpm, but I think you are still confirming that it is normal.

Thanks

I found mine will not drop into OD if its cold and also it must be over about 80Kph. When all is hot and over 80K's OD comes in and engine runs about 2200rpm at 100Kph. Usually takes about 5K or so depending on how much I screw it after starting.
Another thing I noticed is if you switch off the OD the revs jump up to about 2700 and the boost also drops from around 10psi to zero. (flat road and on cruise control)
My old disco had to be over 86Kph before auto dropped into top gear.

Thanks Pooly, by your repsonse and some of the others it sound like it is quite normal and I don't have to worry that I have a problem.

Dont know if its any help or not but my old VL commodore which had the 3L nissan motor in it and was auto would not go into overdrive till I was halfway to parramatta and I was coming from prospect till the tranny warmed up, this was normal so that it didnt labour in overdrive. It would also not go into overdrive even when it was warmed up untill I was doing 75klms or more. Regards Steve M

Does the engine also rev higher while at Idle? Perhaps a silly thought, but have you checked that your fast heat up switch on the dash is in the off position? My patrol was iddling to high for a while until I noticed that my todler had flicked it on while playing in the car.
