I want to replace the 75ah deep cycle battyery which came with my Trak shak with a 100ah AGM battery. Has anyone had any experience with fitting such a battery into the battery box on the front of the Trak Shak? Are there any brands or other specs I should look out for? Any other (relevant) advice?
cheers,
Dave

Hi Dave

Most AGM batteries are similar. Do you have the required space ?

330x175x230h

I don't have any pictures on hand of the 'Tool box'

The thing you must make sure of is the charge cable from the car. Use a min of 6 B&S and Anderson plugs.

Regards

Derek.

I noticed you advised to us a Anderson plug, I have mine through a 7 pin trailer plug. Are you saying this is no good? the cable is 6mm.

Depends on what 7 pin plug you are using. If it is the large one that the Victorians and crow eaters use then it will be ok. All the others (flat or round) are too lite. In fact they are unsuitable for a 3 way fridge, the fridges all draw over 10 A and the pins are rated rated at 5-7 A. I once had a small pin weld itself into the socket running a fridge.

If you have the 7 pin flat plug then you can replace it with the 12 pin plug & socket, all your other trailers will still fit - they simply plug into the 7 small pins. The large pins are rated at 30 A

am confused, have the large 7 pin plug and was told it would be ok by auto lec. but same auto lec sold me a 5amp diode to put inline from the van to car but that only lasted five minutes.

Hi Slush

Keep the 7 pin for the tail lights but fit a Anderson plug for the battery.

There is no way you will get 16mm2 wire into a 7 pin plug. You will also need to fit an isolator.

It appears that these campers are wired with 6 sqmm cable not 16 sqmm cable. You introduce the latter without advising them that they have a complete rewire of the charging system in their tow vehicle and campers - tut tut.

What is the maximum size cable that you can insert into:
1. the connectors with the small pins.
2. the large connectors on the 12 pin plugs
3. the connectors in the large 7 pin plugs?
If you can not work it out then measure the diameters of the recesses with your vernier calipers and I will work it out for you.

Hi PeterD

1. the connectors with the small pins.
2. the large connectors on the 12 pin plugs
3. the connectors in the large 7 pin plugs?

1) What connector are you referring to ? 50 amp Anderson Plugs ? 16mm2
2) 35A rated 6mm2
3) 30A rated 4.8mm2

In my opinion non of the 7 or 12 pin plugs should be used for any battery bank over 75 a/h. Voltage drop is a big problem in thin cable.

Voltage drop equals: cable length (in metres) X current (in amps) X 0.017) divided by cable CROSS SECTION in mm.sq.

6mm2 is not acceptable for any length over 4m when trying to charge a battery in parallel from another battery.

Derek.

Derek

In the first pin size. I was referring to the flat 7 pin connectors or small round connectors.

Hi Dave

There is no way you can charge a battery through a 7 pin plug. 6mm2 cable is the core size not the insulation size and would not fit into a 7 pin plug.

Derek.
