G'day,
When I switch on the compressor, it builds up pressure then powers off. OK so far. Then switch on the (rear) locker- activates solenoid OK but the compessor keeps pumping. Air coming out of diff. breather, and traces of HP (diff) oil around solenoid.
Obviously a seal gone- but where, and what's the go in repairs???

I had something similar on a recent trip where I was using the difflock a few times. Oil started appearing around the solenoid everytime I turned the solenoid off. I was told by local 4WD place that it means a seal/o-ring has partially failed in the difflock itself & the ARB fix is to instal a non-return valve in the airline (about $60 from memory). You could replace the failed o-ring but of course that would be far more expensive. btw .. have a look at www.stu-offroad.com/axle/arb/arb-9.htm

Don't know about your additional problem re continuous running of the air compressor .. perhaps the o-ring(s) are well & truly stuffed

Oh dear- then I guess this weekend is stuffed. I'll be under the vehicle gettin that 'orrible diff oil all over the place. I'll nick up to Moorebank this arvo and get some seal & o rings...
Whats the go on the non-return valve?? Might be worth trying before I get serious??

Before you pull everything to bits check that it's not the bulkhead fitting where the airline joins the internal copper pipe that is leaking. There's a little O-ring in there and it can leak so that the air goes into the diff housing but doesn't get outside. Crank it up a little and see if it fixes it. If not pull the bulkhead fitting apart and check the condition of that O-ring before pulling the whole diff carrier out. Casper

I don't know how old you diff locks are but on older vehicles the air delivery collar that sat over the end of the diff carrier had 2 parallel orings that ran on the diff carrier

What whould happen with usage is the metal diff carrier would wear on the surface where the orings ran (the same way that a pinion oil seal rubber lip will wear a track in metal diff flange)

I don't know if later air lockers still use this system to put air to the diff centre

I am not saying that this is what is wrong with yours but it may be & to fix this is a diff centre out job

Regards Don
