Has anyone camped at the
camp ground in Wongi
State Forest (near
Maryborough and Hervey Bay, QLD). I'm looking to
camp there for a few days while fishing Lenthalls
Dam, about 15KM away.
As we will leave the
campsite unattended for extended periods, I'm wondering if there has been any known security problems there in the past. Don't want to get back from a good days fishing (hopefully) to find the
camp site has been raided.

Do you mean at the Wongi
Waterholes??
great spot!
as for security... hard to say, if your's was the only tent there, and there was no vehicle...
Lots of people pass through the
waterholes, day trippers (myself and my family included).
If there were other campers around, I'd be fairly confident.
as an aside, have you caught up with the changes in rules for Lenthalls?? nobody really seems to know what's going on ATM!

Yes Dave, the
Waterholes is
the spot.
The
dam is now only open (lock on the
gate and security guard) from 6.00AM to 4.00PM. They are 'renovating and improving the
recreation facilities' and the restrictions are in place for 'safety reasons'. They will apparantly be lifted when the work is finished. Not sure of all the upgrades, but includes new or improved
toilets, picnic and BBQ facilities and providing wheel chair access.
Apart from the time restrictions, they are now policing the 6HP max motor size, which has always been the rule (but not policed).
Although the restrictions prevent fishing during some of the best times, I figure they will also help in reducing the number of boats on the lake.

okay, that's what we had heard, apparently the 'ferals' moved in a couple of weeks ago and starting knocking off construction and landscaping equipment. So left no choice but to lock it.
Where are you located Norm??

Dave, don't know about ferals, but both Wongi and Lenthalls have gradually had the noose tightened over the last several years. Bans on fires at the
Waterholes campsite was amongst the earlier signs of an 'upgrade' to the locality.
We certainly can't predict the date of a future visit.
RIP, one more spot. Jeff.H.

Sorry Norm C: once again, I've spoken out of turn.
You obviously know the setup at Wongi.
We haven't camped at Lenthall's since they ripped the trees out and lay both turf and sealed "accesses" to designated
camp sites, just up from the wall.
No doubt it shall be a thing of great beauty in 15 years..........just leave yer bloomin dog at
home. (AND wear socks with your Sandals at all times, -- stop. JH.

Dave, I'm on the
Gold Coast. Going up to Fraser Island for the 'clean up Fraser' week-end over Australia Day and thought we would extend our time in the area and fish a few of the dams. Planning on spend 2 or 3 days at each of Lenthalls, Monduran and Awoonga.
Jeff, don't know what you are apologising for. All info is good. I'm aware of the no fires at Wongi (pity). Although I know a little about Lenthalls and Wongi (from reading and research), I've never been to either. Camping is no longer allowed at Lenthalls. Wongi is the closest available. I've heard that they may put camping back in at Lenthalls (with caretaker and $$), but not confirmed.
Haven't been to Monduran either, but camping is available at the lake there in a CP. Have fished Awoonga before and we stay at a
free camp at the Boyne River end of the lake when up there.

At the moment the road into Lenthalls is absolutly shocking, with the work on raising the wall, I carted fuel into the site everyday for the 3 months before christmas and wrecked the
suspension on 2 trucks, it was taking 20 to 30 minuits both ways to do the 10 klm trip from the highway. Some of the tipper and concrete trucks flatly refused to go in there the road was so bad.

RosscoH, do you know how much of that road I will have to travel going from Wongi to Lenthalls?
I'll be using my fold up trailer for the boat for that commute and the trailer has no
suspension (to keep the weight down). Looks like about 7 KM from Lenthalls out to the road that leads from Wongi to the Bruce Highway. Does that sound right?
Might be a very slow trip if the road is as bad as you say when I'm there.

Hi Norm,
Your calculations would be about right, roughly about 7-8 klm, From Wongi to that turnoff is not great but not too bad, but that other 7-8 klm is going to hammer the hell out of your boat and trailer. The last time I was out there was 2 weeks before christmas and I doubt that they would have done anything with the road since. We pulled out of the fuel contract just because of the road.
Cheers Rossco.
