Hi to all aboves .....
One of the many uses of our 4WD's is to get us to our CAMPING sites !!
This should now put me On Topic???
And, at said campsites, some of us [weirdo's?] go out gold-detecting ..........
using sensitive metal detectors ............
which then generally detect everything but gold ..........!!!
including the metal eyelets, lace ends, nails, etc IN OUR BOOTS !!
These things are really that sensitive .................
Apart from wearing 'runners'/thongs/bare feet and the like, what boots do YOU use to overcome this problem ???
I detect [ take that with a grain/gram of salt, though?] in rocky/hilly/quartz-ridden country [FNQ], with the added potential for large wiggelund-hissenbiters, sturdy protective footwear is de rigeur!!
As there is limited shopping in my community for sussing this out ..... please help ??
No doubt the
Forum has many Members/visitors who have resolved this problem before .............
for the "detectorists" here ...... the problem has only become evident now that I am using my 'dustbin lid' coil !! Bloody thing is so big I almost kick it on every second step .
Thanks ........................ Pedro

It can take a lot of patience and effort to find gold. Have a look at this site. You might find some answers to your problems.

Hey Pedro , Old Mate,
Were you a lawyer in a previous life?
You come in here with a perfectly legit question, but preface it with some 4wd thinggi. (Talk about covering your arse. Sheesh.)
Just
check earlier posts, Pedro, and I think you'll find that you're
well within guidelines.
Mate, relax. Go thongs or
Dunlop Volleys. I imagine that most of your movements are fairly slow: she'll be right, mate: no self respecting snake will take offence.(Maybe carry several compression bandages and a Sat phone, just in case my suggestions are based on bullsit).
Pedro, remind me: what was our last topic? JH.

It is a problem. Even some runners I bought with Velcro fastening (much better around
camp than laces anyway) had metal in them somewhere! and would trigger my detector. In the cooler, wetter weather in Victoria I often wear my Wellingtons and they have zero metal content.
Only other thing I can suggest is to buy shoes/boots from Big W, Kmart etc who have a no questions return policy, take them
home and run the detector over them; repeat until a pair with no metal is found then return and buy a second pair for when the first wears out.
Good hunting .

Hi Pedro, I've over come the problem by lengthening the control arm, the whole system I use is like a double handled whipper snipper set up. The control box on the stem sits about 12" behind me and counter balances the weight when using the big coil. Most of the time I use the 14" coil but it still works great with it also.
When swinging in the scrub I have always used my old Blundstones, and because the coil is further away I've never had this problem now. I found this whole set up much easier on my back too. cheers Unc, oh by the way how are you doing in the Wenlock area??

Pedro,
I've used 18 inch coils and nver had a prob when wearing ny Blundstones or Rossi boots. I beleive there is a steel arch plate in these but I've never checked.
Are you sure that you're ground balancing correctly - IN EXACTLY THE SAME PLANE AS THAT IN WHICH YOU SWING YOUR COIL. This is important. If you ground balance off to one side and then start swinging dierctly in front of you, any additional metal in a boot or shoe then affect the balance of the coil and could give off a faint or subdued groan as it passes yoer footwear.
If you go to Doc Lousignonts "Yank-Aussie Prospecting Forum" he sells a great pair of boots that have no metal in whatsoever and are highly recommended by the Yanks that use 'em. If you go there tell Doc that 'Les in
Perth sent ya". He's been a mate of
mine fer years.
Doc's site link is: " target="EOF" class="lbg">www.findmall.com/list.php?27
I always wear boots when 'bippin". Joggers etc just cause my feet to ache like buggery and as for detecting in thongs
well - nuff said. ALthough I once knew a guy that detected barefoot. But he was a nutter anyway - and a thief as I
well remember, ran off with my Codan
HF radio!!

G'day Pedro,
Like Brian (WA) above, I wear Rossi elastic sided boots, non steel capped, when shufling around the backblocks picking up nails, cartridge shells, horseshoes, beer cans and foil. They are tough and never wear out, but above all, they are bloody comfortable. You can wear them all day trampling over all sorts of terrain and at the end of the day your feet are as good as new. I can highly recommend them. I have been told that Blunderstones are as good (just to be unbiased), just make sure you get the non steel capped boots.
Regards

Hi Pedro, I can recommend redback boots (without steel caps) and they have no metal, last for ages and very comfortable as
well.
regards,
Peter
