A intercooler gives approx 10% power increase to a diesel so i don't think the gains you might get a low speed pulling air through the intercooler to make it more efficient would warrant the expense & extra stuff you need to fit to the engine

The more stuff you add to a vehicle (unless needed) the less reliable it will be

My thoughts but others may disagree

Wayne-O,

Is that Wayno from near Safety Bay?? If so I have a spare intercooler, with fan, off a 2.8 motor that you can have for a play around. If someone doesn't take it out of my shed soon I'm gonna throw it out. I'm in Shoalwater. PM me.

I assume your thinking of a fan that will pull external air through the fins and not a fan that will blow air through the intercooler body - that's what the turbo does!!

Bilbo, if Wayno-O doesn't want your I/cooler, I was wondering if you could take some photo's of it, particularly the mounting points. I'm interested because Truckster and I are looking at modifying the intercooler on his TD6 GU and if the mounting points are similar I could cut off the endtanks and get a larger custom intercooler core made and weld the endtanks on so as to get a larger I/cooler on his TD6.
If they are the same we might be interested in buying it to modify.
If you want to email direct, me email addy is dabugs44 @ internode dot on dot net
(just remove the spaces and replace dot with . )

Bilbo, I've checked my email, it's now 11pm EST so I would have expected to be here.
Could you just double check if the email addy you sent it to was correct please?
My email address is a little bit odd in that it is internode.on.net and not internode.com.net
Alternatively, if you would like to give me your email address, I'll send you an email which will then provide you with a direct link back to me.
Regards Andrew.

leslowe@iinet.net.au

I don't have a file zipping prog as this PC has only just come back up from a disaster 'n I've lost a heap of software. It may be that the file is too big,,,,,,

What with Roachies stuff and now these pics, I'm having a real bad night with this "Personal Confuser"!!

Good luck,

Bilbo

I have fitted a fan to the top of my intercooler. It is a 9" thermo and sits well inside the bonnet air intake. The fan is bolted on top of the plastic engine shroud. Had to reverse the fan blades to make them push the air through the intercooler.

The fan cost $30 on e-Bay ( or just over a slab of Hann Premium light in real money)

Did it make a difference. I believe it did especially at low speed (1st 2nd gear) and low range stuff. I keep a log on fuel use and the figures appear to more constant since installing the fan. There are so many variants with fuel consumption I would not place much emphasis on the results at this point in time.

It worked for me

Like others have said, yes it should make a differnece. If you check the trader section, it just so happens I currently have 2 thermo fans for sale. The 10" unit would be ideal for your needs I would imagine.
Cheers

Roachie,

Are we talking about the same thing here? This one that I've got is off a 2.8 Nissan turbo diesel and has the fan and wiring already fitted to the back of it. How come you need to fit a seperate fan to these others? Or is a 4.2 intercooler different?

Bilbo,
No, the fans I'm selling are just simple Davies Craig fans which are usually employed to assist with blowing air through a radiator to assist with cooling. I wouldn't think they'd be any different to the ones used to blow/suck air through a top-mount intercooler.
Cheers mate

Hi Bilbo,
Yes the 2.8 and 3.0 TD come with intercooler fans, the 4.2 TD6 doesn't. Maybe because the boost level is lower they thought they'd save a couple of bucks at the factory?
