There is an interesting article in todays
Brisbane Sunday Mail stating that budget cuts within the Queensland Parks & Wildlife Service have fuelled speculation the State Government will consider charging a daily access fee to national parks & forests.
The article went on to say that Currawinga National
Park(home of the save-the-bilby sanctuary in southwest Queensland) was being run down because of lack of funding with its operating budget. The new
ranger in charge of
Currawinya is based at
Thargomindah, about 180km to the north.>The
toilets were off limits & the famous
heritage-listed woolshed had been closed to the public, with wire mesh nailed across entrances.

the problem is easy fixed. first the gov. could keep their hands out of the money bag and second let some of the 4x4 clubs help with the up keep of such parks in exchange for some access. a win win for all.

They looked at doing that down in the Snowies, but last I heard NPWS staff had put a work ban on working with volunteers as they were concerned that if the Government saw them doing more with less, then they would get even less funding and the possibility of job cuts.
There was also the problem of who would cover the workers compensation and gaining all the safe workplace certificates that staff are issued following training.

Agree with slush - and I would bet that on the whole the fees wont go back into the parks but into 'admin costs'.

and the goats in
Currawinya beggar belief.
You would hardly believe that there was money to be made in harvesting them ...

I liked the bit where some pollie argued that funding has increased by $19 million over the past five years to be $95 million this year.
WOW - that's a big increase of less then 4% per year. Just slightly above inflation and
well below the payrises the pollies get.
