Hi,

I'm a long time lurker, first time poster. I've done a bit of searching on the above topic and have come across a few good threads - it seems as though you can't reply once the threads get however old - anyway, I have a few questions that I hope can be answered - I am interested in making a sand spear (if it doesn't cost too much) for camping down at Stockton beach. I'm not sure how good the water table is there, but I’d be interested in having a go.

Hi

Built my own using a piece of hose, 50mm of pipe, hand pump and homemade filter. Will be testing it on Fraser over the Xmas New Year break. Have ten days to perfect it. Total cost $50.

Would have problems leaving a $300 + spear and $380 pump lying around the campsite.

Will have some feedback in the New Year

So, Redeye - how did it go? - Do you have any pics?

Hey Justin

We make our own and use then near large dunes and in our campsite. In our camps we have some down about 12 feet (we made special plunger to suck out the sand) and at the bottom of the dunes about 6 feet for fresh WATER. We use sureflo 12v pressure pumps and can spray ab out 10 meters with a hose attached. best WATER in the world. I have a drawning on our most recent spear about 5ft long, let me know and i can email it to you. Hardest thing is to find the stainless steel mesh required to ensure no sand get through.

cheers

Adam"

You mentioned that you had a drawing Adam - could you possibly post it and do you have any pictures.

Just so that all of the relevant threads I found are in one place for the benefit of others, here are a couple of others that I found:

Thanks for that Dags,

I think I'll give the PVC one a go - how does it stand up to being put in and removed from the ground? i.e. does it only last a few times?

Do you get much water coming out of the pump; enough to have a shower?

Thanks again

Nick.

nick last forever if you look after it take a long handle shovel and dig the hole down to the water table for it. sometimes it is 600 to 1800 below the sand ,yes good enough to run a shower my pump pulls 38 litres a minute which i put through a gas hot water system. they where making spears for the fire brigade the only thing that resricts the water pressure is the size of your pump and yes regardless of what you hear the water is pretty good quality good luck Dags

Thanks for all of you help Dags,

Just one last question (hopefully) :)

- Do you have holes drilled in the sides of your spear like the glind one, or do you just have the end covered with some sort of a filter?

- What sort of filter do you use? - would very fine shadecloth or similar work; or would you need to get either that stainless steel mesh or even a filter like the one available from glind?

Thanks Again,

Nick.
