Hi All,
Will be crossing the Nullarbor from Perth for the first time in May 2007. Any advice on the best accommodation would be appreciated.

Im guessing you re talking about chalet/motel style accomodation?

Avoid Balladonia, it will cost you $150 for a single bed!!!

Madura pass is nice, havent used the chalets, however their camping facilities are very reasonable and reasonable priced, and from memory chalet accomodation, at the time, the price sounded ok.

Noresman has the choice of a couple of caravan parks and the motels. I have stayed in one of the caravan parks in an onsite cabin, and they were very reasonably priced (60 per night??). However there are a couple of decent motels, it would be worth doing a google on norseman.

Also Fraser range station is supposed to be very nioce (between Noresman and balladonia) I dont know much about it, but have been told by many that I should stop off there.

Good luck, and enjoy the trip

no probs, from what Ive seen, the accomodation at Eucla is not bad, clean and basic. My wife stayed there a few years ago on her move to the west and she had no complaints. I havent used thier accomodation, however they make a pretty mean bacon and egg sanga with BBq sauce, which should be testimony to any good stop :)

Madura pass is only about an hour before eucla, however if you are staying in norseman, it may be a little too close.

As stated, Mundrabilla is a good stop for fuel. Also Eucla is generally cheaper thanBorder Village.

have a good trip

I stayed in a motel unit at Mundrabilla about 15 months ago - it was basic, clean, and I managed to get one channel out of the TV! Reasonable price. And diesel is best bought at Mundrabilla and Penong.

Cheers

The accomodation is all pretty basic so I try to find somewhere with some interesting things to see. As mentioned Madura Pass has a nice feel and the view from the Pass to the ocean is very nice.

From Eucla you can take a small drive to see the ruins of the old telegraph station. From Border town there is an interesting short drive (or decent walk) to some cliffs looking over the ocean. There is also a memorial there but I can't remember the significance of it.

I find it a good drive and there is always something to see if you've got the time to look.

I can't recall any of the above as being 4wd only. Most are bumpy tracks but shouldn't stop a rear wheel drive and the ones mentioned are short drives so no need to go fast.

You could also drive out to Cocklebiddy cave which is only about 10 kms of the highway (to the north) and you can actually climb a steel ladder down into the cave.

Thanks for the info, it not only helps me, but lots of other Nullarbor novices who don't know what to expect.
People want to know these things, especially about accommodation, food & fuel.

Hi,

I have travelled the road a couple of times - the accommodation at Eucla is good for what you get i.e. basic and clean. As with anywhere along the road it is going to be expensive for fuel and food so be prepared.

It may pay to use a site like www.travelmate.com.au to help find accommodation along the way. It will give you distances, travel times, list motels etc.

I used the site to pre-book all of my accommodation so I didn't have to worry about turning up and finding it booked out and then worked out my travel time accordingly.

Thanks for your suggestions,
We realise things are going to be on the pricey side, but as long as we have somewhere clean to sleep for the night.

Have a look at www.nullarbornet.com.au/ . The prices quoted are April 2004, but they should be some sort of a guide.

Once you are on their town maps there is a link near the top that will take you to the next town in the desired direction. It starts with the towns of Esperance and Koolgardie in the west and goes through to Port Augusta in the east. The home page links to a travel planner but once you are viewing the towns there is no link back. Otherwise I am extremely impressed.

Fraser Range Station does not feature - the only price I can remember is $25 for a powered site last year.

Gday misterb. Our family of 6 went across over xmas. We went from Perth - Esperance -Border Village -Port Augusta -Mildura. Accom costs in order :Esperance -Cabin at C.P $76, Border Village -motel room with 2 or 3 tv channels $109, Port Augusta -Cabin at C.P $106. Definately get fuel at Mundrabilla ($1.45/l for 100% Biodiesel or for ULP). Avoid Balladonia like the plague($1.67/l Diesel). Food is a bit expensive going across but it is a long way out there. Hope this helps.

One good tip from me is to make sure you take some decent earplugs with you as the noise from the hundreds of trucks which pass by through the night might render you sleepless.

On our last trek across in August 06 we camped along off the highway and admittedly there was more noise. At one place we camped 4km from the Highway and still the noise of the trucks seared through the night. I would hate to pay $100 per night and still hear the trucks rumbling by.

Earplugs work wonders! :-D

Cheers
