Hi aain
further to my post 40877, I am still getting the run around from manufacturers (I've emailed some) re whether or not their LCD tellies that are run from 'bricks' (power adaptors) will therefore run on 12vDC from a battery - you'd think some of them had never heard of a battery! I have explained that the voltage may be 13.5volts (or even a little more) but that normal voltage drop will bring that down. I have asked if that voltage is within the 'usual' tolerance of typical circuitry for these tellies - none of them know for sure (fair enough you might say) but (frustratingly) none of them will find out - not fair enough I think. Retailers are not keen on me connecting one their demo models to my Thumper to
check it out - funny about that!
The question is: has anybody reading this actually fitted the barrell plug type that goes into the tellie (from the 'brick), to a cigarette lighter (or Hella type) plug and plugged into a normal, everyday, run-of-the-mill car (or similar) 12v DC battery? Did it work OK and is it still working?
Thanks in advance
George

Hi there George, I've just been out and done exactly that! The TV powers up, but then switches straight back off again. Maybe it is not getting full current as the cord I have is only a thin one and not the designated 12volt one for the telly. We only purchased this one yesterday and will see if there is one available for it.

Wow what a coincidence - yes - at 12v DC the telly requires a fair few amps I suspect and small gauge wiring may be the problem. On the other hand - is it that the circuitry is getting too many volts to deal with and is immediately shutting down???
The only manufacturer that I have come across with a proprietary 12v DC adaptor on offer is Palsonic - unfortunately the only model they have powered by a brick has an in-built DVD player and I have bought a separate unit because I want to use that as a portable one. They don't have any other suitable size LCD TV/panels that are 12vDC driven. Their adaptor was $27 and I was told at Jaycar electronics that that is great value as 12v dc voltage regulators (which is what it probably is) are horrendously expensive.

Hi again George, just had a rummage around for another thicker lead and , bingo, telly fires up and stays on this time, must have been the other lead as I suspected. The LCD we bought draws 30 watts. cheers unc

Thanks muchly......

I purchased a 17" Digitor from Dick Smiths Site Link 12 months ago.
It has a "brick" power supply with a 12V output and I made up a lead to suit for the van - works a treat.

Just make sure that the polarity of the 12 volt lead is the same as the polarity out of the power brick. You can use a digital multimeter to
check this. I neglected to do this with my Koss flat panel, and you guessed it, the 12 volt lead I used had a negative centre (which is unusual) and the power brick was positive centre. Expensive lesson as they do not have the polarity protection diode and fuse that any equipment should have. She no work no more........

Hey George,
I was in tandy (same as dick smith) just the other day and was about to purchase an LCD flat screen for my camper trailer which has been wired up for 12 volt. The sales guy told me to get some special $7 adapter and only certain LCd's were capable to work on this small adapter/plug. The alternative was to purchase an inverter for 49 bucks or the 300 watt inverter for 89 bucks. Let me know how you go george as I thought I would research it a bit more before paying out the money. Cheers lyndal

Hi - I went into Tandy (
Adelaide Central Plaza) today. The manager actually tried to help!!!! He got the box out for the display product and sure enough it doesn't come with a cigar lighter adapter. However he said it would be perfectly OK to use their own adapters - there they were on the J hooks and one model comes with several different barrel plugs for polarity changing - see the previous postings for how critical the polarity is.
The adapter is $24 or so - that cost plus the unit is still good value and the picture looked excellent - they had one on. The manager said they were $500 a year ago.

Hi AdlelaideGeorge
I have put a lot of time into bringing in 12V LCD TV's.
12V DC 17 inch with built in DVD player.
...and yes we supply a 240V AC supply.
Why not just visit the site sponsors.
Regards
Derek.

Another option - I bought a high definition digital tuner which plugs into a USB port on my laptop from Retravison. Cost about $150. The coax cable from the aerial plugs straight in and you do a channel search and then kick back and watch telly. Works
well.

Hi - I'll buy the Digitor 17" LCD flat panel from Tandy (it's no BluRay but it's pretty good!) - that's $359. I'll get a $9:00 cigar lighter adpter (with built-in fuse and on/off switch - bare ends for soldering) from them and a barrel plug that fits the telly. Solder it up after checking the polarity and I should be in business - for about $369. Got to
check out omni-directional aerials next. Hills Industries (in
Adelaide) sell a marine/camper unit that should do it (I'm installing all this in a boat and boats 'swing' with wind and tide - important to be omni-directional) but I don't kinow the price yet. Their web site is:
