I had been hoping to go camping up around the Jamieson area over Xmas / Nyear however the roads were closed but once re-opened the camping grounds were then closed off by Parksvic. I was very annoyed because I had been up to the area on boxing day and spoke to one of the guys who was
clearing the last of the trees of the road from Vicroads who said we should be right for the following week. So after hearing people on the radio / TV and reading articles in the paper we packed up and headed up that way only to be told by the local Police man that Parksvic had now closed the camping grounds. He was just as annoyed as I was. So I headed to the local caravan park who gave me the following quote for an unpowered site to set up a tent ($28 per night plus $16 for my two children aged 2 & 6). $44 per night for nothing I thought and told them that was pure profiteering. I thought an unpowered site would be something like $10 per night or so but the fact that they want to charge for a 2 year old I thought was disgusting!!!
Money is not the issue as I then made a phone call and headed to
Bright and paid $90 per night for a 3 bedroom unit with full amenities including
pool, bbq and spent 4 nights there.
My issue is that I really believe the caravan park operator was cashing in on the situation and it is not right.

Hi Robnicko, I can understand your dissapointment. However fires are unpredictable and what you were told by the
ranger may have changed by the following week. We always
check dse and parks web pages for latest info. radio and tv are not reliable unless there is a super emergency. Otherwise they lose interest and stop reporting so people think the threat has passed. I have been speaking with friends from
Bruthen for the past few weeks who have assured me that the threat was not gone and knew that the lack of media reporting on major stations would give the impression that things were fine again.
As for the caravan park, it sounds steepish but I would not begrudge them. They need to eat and run their business and this is the time of year that they make the most money. I'm tipping this particular year they are suffering as people will have stayed away in droves. The best thing you could have done for them was stay there and spend your hard earned.
Next time
check the source of the info (ie. dse, cfa, parks vic) before leaving. Don't just rely on the media.

HowdyDoody,
I understand your point , especially the last one about info source however what seems to be happening is one dept closes then opens access (vic roads) then along come parksvic who close it off again without giving any reason. I had been down to the
campground in question and there was no fire damage whatsoever, green grass all over and not a
sign of fire. Yes, further down the road there was evidence of fire damage but is was
well and truly out. I have been visiting the area for the last 18 years and will still do so.

Guys,
Unfortunately the Vicroads site and their information has slowed considerably since the fires began. We were using their website daily and it seemed to be updated three to four times a day.
I checked it again today in relation to the fires NE of Bairnsdale and there wasn't any mention of them at all. The police/DSE up that way have closed the highway about three times over the last 3-4 days - no mention of this on Vicroads.
The most up-to-date info appears to be a combination of CFA and DSE.
As said above though, this info can change as quickly as the wind does....
Tim - Stratford.

Bob, It often happens when Vic roads or the Police open roads around a fire zone for Parks or other local councils to then close
camp sites or public area's as they see fit. Obviously all public areas need to be inspected for half burnt trees & other dangers exposed by the fires. (
mine shafts, land slides, dead animals in the water etc) The immediate danger may have past but thats not to say hot winds could not reignite a fire in the area, not until they get heavy rain will that threat pass. You may have noticed that they are still busy fighting the fires & I'd suggest they haven't had time to inspect your
camp site (or many others for that matter). If that has inconvienienced your long planned holiday
well sorry bad luck. Maybe opening up a web page or making a couple of calls would have given you the detail you needed. I would have thought that great big illuminated
sign out of
Mansfield saying no camping past Jamieson would have been a givaway. Probably the easiest way to see whats open would be to put a simple post on ExOz. Having been up to
Woods Point & Jamieson just before Xmas I certainly would have steered you clear.
There are still heaps of great camping spots in Victoria without the need to go anywhere near the fires. Everyone should give the fire fighters some room & keep off the roads.
And where did I go for Xmas? Beechport. No smoke, great 4 wheeling, no crowds & $20 a night for a family of 5 :-)
Cheers Craig.............

not sure about the "no crowds".
Whilst it was very quiet on the weekend, it looked like half of Australia had done the
Beachport tracks ;-)
Cheers
Andrew.
