Hi all in fourbyland,
Has anyone put larger ignition leads on a 4.5ltr petrol 80 before? say 8mm?
I was looking @ the LCOOL site and there was a section describing a guy doing this and found he had a big difference in performance.
The ones on my 80 are the standard 5mm leads and look to be the original ones as I cannot read any numbers on them.
If anyone has done this, do you have the sizes and numbers as I dont know what
mine are.
cheers!

Hi you will find the standard leads are 5mm, and i don't thik you will find a set of 8 mm leads for a 1h fz j80.
I fitted a set of TOP GUN leads about $150 and did make an improvement over the old original leads. have a look at the top gun site for more info.
That guy on the LCOOL site was refering to the old 4 litre 12 valve Donk.

Hi Steven the improvement was like when you fit a new set of spark plugs.
just run and pulled away better than before,it allso fixed an intermitant hesitaition
when starting off. the old leads were the originals and had done 138000ks.
I found the top gun leads fitted up ok just be a little patient as to install them neat.
I have a 95 fzj80 gxl

Hi TOP GUN LEADS part no TG 6094 for a 6 cyl 4500Liter
1FZ-FE eng.
that is a complete kit ready to install, i found they fitted up very
well.
as i am allways reluctant with after market gear as it is not just the same.

Hi Selasticman,
I looked at changing my 80 'shoelace' leads - NGK aftermarket type, for Magnecor type. I'd used Magnecor before, although 7 or 8mm on my old rangie.
They were so expensive for an 80, l nearly keeled over! The NGK's are still there.
However, the mob in
melbourne (nunawading from memory) were making them up to suit, so l suppose they could also make 8mm leads if the connectors are available. But for Magnecor, why bother with the thick ones. For $75 el-cheapo's, l suppose nobody will make them up and boxed kits wont be available.
I'd be interested to hear how go.
Cheers

Hi Bob,
When you mean el-cheapo's, you mean the ones from supacheap and repco?

Hi Selasticman,
Yeah, just the basic 'low resistance' types that are cheaper (much) than a decent lead like a Magnecor.
My reason for Magnecor on the rangie was that it constantly backfired at in opportune moments! Bloody dangerous at times, if stranded across middle of road.
They completely transformed the car.
However my NGK's dont give me any trouble either. Not sure how much they cost tho.
Cheers

Places like repco, auto
barn, have leads already made at various lengths, all you need to do is take your leads in and they will match them to the right length.
