Tia Maria.
Yes and No.
CDMA is wide spread throught NZ and Aussie phones will work in NZ if roaming is enabled.
NextG or 3G is also spreading across NZ but Aussie phones wont work because Australia has gone it alone with a frequency that no one else uses where as NZ is using a world STD, don't know what it is though. Some NextG phones in Australia may be multi frequency though.

Thanks to Clive,Mr Fawlty, Howie & Steve. I guess life wasn't meant to be easy. I'll continue research and post the results. Bye the bye Clive, are Aussie dollars accepted in NZ?
Ta again,

Tia Maria.
Aussie dollars are accepted in tourist areas but you will get ripped off. Change to NZ dollars before you leave or at entry airport in NZ. You'll gain about 10-12%

Telstra assured me that one of the benifits of next g would be "world wide roaming capacity"...... Maybe Sol would know definativley.

if previous posts are true and nextG is not available in NZ, then i am pretty sure my nextG phone will revert to other gsm bands in NZ (its an i-mate jimjam).
my mobile will pick nextG first, gsm 2nd etc.
might depend on brand of phone?
check it out at your local friendly
shop.

NZ has GSM (Vodafone) and CDMA (Telecom NZ) Both have 3G networks that cover the main centers only.
I don't think that the NextG data will work in NZ as the frequencies are different as suggested in a previous post but voice/text, etc should be OK.
Cheapest option is take an unlocked GSM phone with you and buy a pre-paid card when you get to NZ. Then you have a NZ number and NZ calling rates which are expensive but not as exorbitant as roaming rates.
It is easy as to get a pre-paid working in NZ unlike OZ.
