Guys I need some help

Here is the conundrum:

A certain person on this site has invited me to visit a rather remote area of the Simpson desert.
A mate wants to travel to Cook town and then go North (to God know's where).
I'm interested in the back blocks of Arnhem Land.

Before we start, I'm not interested in how to get to the above locations, what I need to do or any advice regarding preparation. I'm familiar with the territory.

Without due consideration, which of the three options would you chose?

Please don't come back to me with mother statements ( I'm a deeply senitive person).

Looking forward to your response.

Regards

Kim

RACQ Ultra Care but only if you're vehicle weighs less than their limit (laden) - is that 2.5T? and then only if <120 k's from contractor's orifice.

It pays to read the fine print first.

Cheers
Andrew.

Hi Andrew
I am sorry this is not True.
Last time through the Simpson 15th April ,2006. I broke down with a virus in fuel Tank ,The RACQ would not tow me out as it was in a National Park,
I had the truck towed back to Birdsville Cost $4500 , RACQ arranged tow back home from Birdsville to Sunshine Coast, They also paid my air Fair back to Brisbane from Alice Springs, No Charge to me. As I was with others so I left Truck in Desert for Theo to Pick Up,& continue the trip with my mates to Alice .
I was told I am allowed $5000 per year , Gee I glad it is a new year.

Also my Truck weighs in @ 3Tonne

Regards

Colin

Perhaps they thought you were sub 2.5 tonne, but even their website has references indicating that you would want to be cautious in your expectations:

Site Link

Brad Newham has some interesting stories to tell about people with unrealistic expectations about what RACQ would be prepared to cover.

Perhaps the issue was not so much that you were in the NP, but that you were more than the maximum 120ks from the Theo's place. $4,500 is not too bad as far as desert retrievals go though.

What toothbrush?

The five casks of wine are packed first. Anything after that is a bonus!

Which one do you feel more inclined to want to do?
Which has been a "dream" for longest?
which do you have more chance of doing next year?

Gidday Truckster,

To be quite honest it would probably be Arnhem Land.

This will be my eight trip up North in as many years and I'm getting a bit short in the money department. However, there is always the trusty credit card.

Hmmmm...tricky conundrum

Remote Simpson better be other than Poeppel Corner or the Rig Road. To most people that would be remote. Offtrack in the Simpson is a bit of an adrenalin rush as you do not know where your wheels will be dropping next. Split decisions have to be made while on the move. Depends on where you are going.

Cooktown is OK with bitumen all the way. North from there sounds interesting. Good fishing and relaxing and staying out of crocs jaws...lol. Might be as busy as Bourke Street tho............

Arnhemland is good value. Lots of crystal clear waters. Lovely camp sites and pristine beaches at the coast. The weather should be good. Access could be a problem though but mebbe things have changed up there.

Cheers

Sounds like a good round trip and maybe 4 to 6 mths on the road? :o)
How would you go for money while away?

Sorry, have been reading a book on postmodernism, where the traditional Aristotle logic of 'either/or' is challenged by quantum physics with a 'and/both' concept. You have to read the book to understand!

Of course work may get in the way.
I am currently seeing if I can change my work position to do more on the road as I travel, what about you?

Preperation - travel as light as you can. How many are there to go?
Like the old system of packing your bag then halving it.
Start getting the car checked out now and do as much as you can before you go replacing suspect parts? Depends on the car you have.

There are other people reading this post. Your suggestion regarding the latter two venues would certaintly add colour to a night on the town for visitors.

I'm assuming your offering your services as a tour guide? LOL

Afternoon Kim,

Arnhem Land is certainly awesome, depending of course where you go.

When you say you are familiar with the territory, is that in general, or are you familiar with the specific places you intend to visit?

My choice would be somewhere that I had not been to previously.

For interest, let us know where you decide to go, and why.

Cheers
Michael

Arnhem Land with an indigenous guide who knew his stuff would be my choice.

David G will be looking for a lift back there after the wet from Darwin - he'd be a lot of fun, so long as you didn't make him angry.
