Hi all Im new to this site and have recently purchased a 98 Patrol 4dr Auto, with the 4500 engine twin tanks etc. Would like your professional opinions on what i need to look out for mechanically. Its done 150,000klm and i plan to do alot more but before i get into the middle of nowhere is there anything i should pay particular attention to? LSD feul pumps, seals etc? i know this is one of those endless questions but i dont know much about the history of the 98 model.

Any advice woud be appreciated.
Cheers

Brilliant vehicle. I had one and drove it everywhere without any major dramas. 100% trustworthy.

Only things to watch out for is the radiator fan develops cracks where the blades meet the hub. Replacement is about $270 but essential for obvious reasons.

The radiator shroud WILL rub a small hole in the aluminium core of the radiator. You need to take it off and examine where the little feet make contact with the core and use a dab of silicone to prevent any future problems.

Here's some part listings and specification stuff to keep in the glovebox that may come in handy if you do your own servicing.....

Engine oil: Castrol Magnatech (7.6litres)

Oil filter: Ryco Z 547

Spark plugs: NGK BPR 5E-11, Bosch Super 4 FR78X (six pack 5/8")

Ignition leads: Cyl #1: B45Ri Bosch Super
Cyl #2: B58Ri
Cyl #3: B72Ri
Cyl #4: B84Ri
Cyl #5: B94Ri
Cyl #6: B104Ri
(N.B. no HT lead req'd)

Distributor cap: Nissan (cap distributor) 22162-VB010

Rotor button: Nissan (rotor head) 22157-VB010

Fuel filter: Ryco Z 201

Alternator belts: 2 x 11A 1130

Power steering belt: 13A 1030

Air-conditioning belt: 13A 0925

Coolant: Tectaloy Gold concentrate

Gearbox: Castrol VMX-M 75W/85 (3.8 litres)

Transfer case: Castrol TQ Dexron 3 (1.9 litres)

Front diff: Castrol EPX 80W/90 (5.4 litres)

Rear diff: Castrol LSX 85W/140 (2.1 litres)

Brake fluid: Dot 3 or Dot 4

Clutch fluid: Dot 3 or Dot 4

Happy motoring!

Thanks fellas, thats some great info, should keep me busy in the coming weeks :) Prefer to do this stuff myself and am looking forward to it.

I have just heard of some overheating issues, is there an easy fix for this? Update the radiator. Change it to a bigger core radiator?

Plus Im looking at getting some more ponies out of the engine but dont want to spend a big packet of $. was watching the Outback 4x4 challenge and one of the competitors said he only replaced the injectors with higher output ones and some minor other things and was very happy with change in power output.
Anything obvious I should be looking at, as this will see plenty of dunes in the near future.

Cheers

I love my 4.5. I did have some overheating issues some time ago but after I took it to the shop and got it professionally cleaned I have not overheated at all since then. I got more power out off a dyno tune.

You have a very capable truck

I wouldnt consider those to be high km - maybe if it had 450,000 on it.
In addition to previous suggestions - change the auto fluid/filterif you havent already - consider a bigger cooler if towing or , doing a lot sand driving, definitly if doing both. LSD should remain tight for another couple of hundred thousand, Nissan LSD's pretty much last forever.
