Bag Boy
G'day all, Just regarding work up north (Mackay,Gladston,Rocky etc), the wife and I are planning to head north for a couple of years to work. Being a Mech Fitter, would it be difficult to get work in the mines??? And what mines are the best ones to work for??? We have planned to tow a caravan behind the ute for accomodation if nessesary...
Any advise would be great.
Thanks
BB.

First of all, good on you. I am envious.
I havent got any personal experience with working at the mines in that area (or any other mine in any other area for that matter), however I do have a mate who went up there looking for work and despite having no formal trade qualifications, he got a job almost immediately, so I would assume that if you have a trade, you will have no problems at all.
Good luck with it.

BB.
Mate as a mechanical fitter you will be very sought after. I,m thinking of the same in the near future and have recently had a long conversation with a guy in the
bowen basin region. He tells me Motor mechs earn 80-150k p.a. He gave me a list of companies and did specifically say that BMA were good to work for.
Good Luck
Greg

mate u will have no trouble as all finding work, fitters & boilermakers are the 2 most sort tradesmen wanted up here.
i just finished work up in moranbah about 200kms west of mackay, the fitters there where on salary packages of 109k per yr working 4 on 4 off shifts. id suggest u head up to mackay where most of the minning businesses are based & talk to some of the businesses, but u must be prepared to spend a bit of $ to get ur generics & inductions aprox 2k at most then the world is at ur feet.

Check out the Transfield
Services web site for employment opportunities.
There's heaps of work up that way.
Cheers

Base yourself in Townsville and fly out to a mine and they will beg you to work for them

you can start off with any of the contracting mobs, precise, precision, haines this gives you an oppurtunity to work in different areas and with different companies to see what you like.
my partner is with leightons and has one of the better gigs, under 2hrs drive from
home, 10 mins from
camp to site, four on four off, good pay, good
camp.
Leightons are looking at the moment so take a squiz at thier site for details.
