Hi all!

We have unexpectedly got 10 days off in February and don't know where to go!

We like just driving around exploring different areas of Australia, but all our prior travelling holidays have been during the dry season! Obviously the weather is going to impact our choice this time.

We are in VIC and can either head somewhere driving (fully self sufficient with a GQ Patrol) or we could fly somewhere and hire a car/4WD.

We are tossing around ideas like: east coast, south WA, or possibly Darwin area during the wet just to experience the 'wet' - but not sure on how much we could see though?

Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

Mrs Draff

10 days...... to me I'd be staying a bit closer to home. Have you seen most regions close to you or is there some still on your wish list. If so, go see one of the closer parks, but if they are all burnt out maybe try Yorke Peninsula SA (or similar) with your GQ. More than about 3 days driving (return) would not leave enough time for me to really unwind on a 10 day holiday. You may be different?????

NQ is HOT and STEAMY this time of year, so to me this is not ideal for holidays, it is bad enough having to go up there this time of year for work so I would not holiday up there right now, again just my opinion.

Have fun wherever you end up.
Regards, Trevor.

It's going to be hot so probably should be looking at the high country camping near some water. The upper Murray isn't burning yet & linked together with the Snowy River & Kosciusko would fill in 10 days nicely.
Another option would be over to SA via the Great Ocean Road for beach driving from Cununda National park to the Coorong. Would even have time to slip down to Kangaroo Island as well.
Tassie is just an overnight boat trip & 10 days would give just enough time for a quick look down the west coast. Some challenging driving & plenty of great views.
Cheers Craig..........

Yes the SA coast is great this time of year, often 5 to 10 degrees cooler than Adelaide. If you love driving big sand dunes stop of at the Portland Dune buggy club. You'll need to apply for a permit before you go but they probably have some of the best sand driving in Oz. Into SA you have the Cunundra National Park up to Southend then follow the bay up to Beechport. Then there's plenty of sandy tracks & beaches up the coast through the Millicent buggy club & Little Dip National Park to Robe. If you like a challenge the 5 or 6 hour (return) drive from 42 mile crossing to the mouth of the Murray can be quite difficult but very spectacular.
The Upper Murray is out now anyway following a new fire in the Tom Groggin area which will be difficult to control. Will probably burn for weeks unfortunately finishing off what High Country driving we had left in Victoria this year.
Have fun....Cheers Craig.
