Suddenly neither my main HDD or the backup HDD have any partition. Maybe a power glitch. All the software I could lay my hands on couldn't help, apparently a few other things got zapped also. (I know, I need a UPS)
Anyway much later I have the two disks up and running and I drag out my CD backups etc.
No Oziexplorer !
No GDT s/w ! (Lucky I have the paper ones as well)
YEAA I have Natmap.
No worries, it's on the old lappy. But it's a VERY old lappy and there's no way to get it off. Direct cable connection from WinXP to the Win 98 lappy doesnt seem to work. Spend another day...still no joy.
ARRRGH !!
It's enough to make a man go bush and I would except for the screaming multitudes at my favourite quiet spots.
Anyone got an idea on how to connect XP and Win98 without using infrared, wireless , laplink etc ?? I want my GDT maps and Ozi back!!

Footy,

t download Ozi again from their site, use your key to get it back up and working. Re-install GDT from the CDs. OR is there something you're not telling me :)))

Gramps, I like the way you think. However, in my case the originals have been chucked during a clean up. As in trailer loads for a week.
At the time the cleanup had to be quick and major. I just hope I threw out some not so needed stuff also. It's a long painful story.
However, I now need the stuff off the blasted lappy. I might have to buy the latest version of both...again if I cant find a way. PITA.

Have you still got the key code for Ozi ? If yes, you should be able to apply it to a Demo copy downloaded from their site, methinks :P

23 boxes of CDR's went west, along with around half a ton of paperwork and half my wardrobe. Not to mention the rest. 30 years worth of the good, the bad, and the downright won't fit any more cause it shrank.
The worst bit is the new floor coverings are costing 2 arms, a leg and my first born.

Gramps, now would I blame SHMBO ?
ummm....
To be honest if I'd payed more attention it and been better prepared (and I dont mean the area mined), it probably wouldnt have happened.
Let's just say that we're both a bit quiet at the moment :((

Does both the laptop and the XP PC have fully functional working USB ports.

If so, I have a USB to USB connect cable with both XP and 98 software that would do the job, BUT, your 98 system must have USB support for it to work.

Let me know as I have 2 of these cables and can post one to you if you need.

It is possible to remove the HDD from the laptop and using a 2.5" to 3.5" adaptor cable, the laptop HDD can be temporarily fitted to the XP PC as a master drive on the second IDE connector (might have to temporarily disconnect the CD/DVD drive) and then when the PC is rebooted the XP should recognise the laptop HDD and then it is just a case of copy and paste the data you need from the laptop HDD to the XP HDD.

I know that probably sounds a bit double dutch if you are not computer savy, so maybe you need to find a computer tech to do it for you.

If I was in your vicinity I would do it for you, but I doubt you live close enough to me for that to be of any help.

Sorry, but I cant offer suggestions.

Ahhhh...the penny drops. An adaptor cable, of course. Then I can just boot it in XP which will read it as a FAT16 .
How silly of me, I didn't realize they existed. Hmmm....
Thanks for that, Cruiser. I can take it from here.
Now I'm a bit happier :)))

Footloose,

Here is the type of cable you need

Site Link

Anywhere are purely a wholesaler so you cant buy direct from them, but any PC store worth there while should be able to order one in for you.

Good luck.

Sorry, I have been saying cable when in fact it is an adaptor the connects between the 2.5" laptop HDD and a standard 3.5" IDE cable.

Hope this makes it clearer.

Next time I'm going to back up to CD's...again.

F'loosie, mate, I thought you folks on THE Hinterland were into networking, and networking in a big way. Surely that is the key. You can have your peer to peer puters all linked up and files shared. Even external drives to save STUFF on. Have it here and also wireless bridges to save it to another site. You SHOULD be into networking mate.......

John, you are of course quite correct. I am sitting here looking at my u beaut home wireless network where I can see what's happening on the wife's puter etc.
(2 more drivers I had to find BTW)
I've networked myself to death here. BUT...
But that was all AFTER putting my stuff on a dinasaur lappy and deciding to re do all the floors.

Sorry cant help - but I feel for you as I dread the day the same happens to me. A search of the forum however reveals a disturbing trend (though I have no idea if its related to the "puter" itself or the user). Those using "puters" seem to have the most problems. Base on this fact alone I would suggest getting a "computer" next time:)
Cheers

Computers are for whimps. Power users drive Landcruisers and have "puters" and Waeco's and never have a Fitch of a day.

Greg,

Only newbies call 'em "computers". Those that have used them for any appreciable length of time call them 'puters, on a GOOD day hahahahaha

You could try taking the hard disc out of the laptop and inserting it into one of those USB drive cases. The hard disc's are usually behind a panel that is easy to get to. The USB cases can be bought from puter shops for $20 or less. It is basically a case that has a plug and space for your hard disc. Once the disc is inserted you plug it into your PC with the case's USB cable.
Your XP PC will see it as a disk drive the same as it see a flash drive or camera drive. Once the drive is visible, you can copy the files across from the laptop HDD to the PC's HDD.
I have a 40gb disk in such a case as a back-up drive. Over USB its not the fastest file transfer rate but it will be adequate for your use.
Once finished take the HDD out of the case and re-install back into your laptop and it will still work ( assuming you don't do something silly like overwiting system files).

Alternativley take the laptop to a puter shop and ask them to copy the ozi folder to a DVD, they will be able to do it for a small fee.

OziExplorer (well my version anyway) stores it's registration information in a file which is drive dependant and will NOT work when transferred.
You WILL be asked to enter you serial number again.
If you have genuinely lost your info, Des will certainly forward you the details necessary to re-register.

Good luck with the rest of your maps.

Yes, my version 3.95.4n will run and retain all saved configurations, paths etc., but only in "shareware/demo" mode until I re-enter my serial number.
A retail copy may perform differently?
