Just been listening to a neighbours friend gloating about how he obtained fire wood for him self and other campers., on his last
camping expedition. Evidently it had been wet the week before, so to collect wood with the least moisture content he threw a rope over a branch of a dead tree, tied it to his 4by reversed back and broke it off, hey presto!! fire wood. Trying to be polite i told him what a risk he took, The chances off WHITE ANTS been there would be most likely, and as they are the smartest engineers in the world , That whole tree could have been like a egg shell, come down and wiped him out. As far as he was concerned things like that don't happen, and I'm a idiot!!.
Well ii probably am a idiot, but if you ever hear off a guy pulling a tree on top of himself with a by it won"t be me i
hope.
Cheers Axle.

When living in the NT we used to find a dead tree still standing. Sure bet it was hollowed out by termites. Push it over with the bullbar. Drive over it a few times to break it up. Hey presto dry fresh burnable firewood. SOP>

It is always advisable to do this trick with a steel bull bar.

For those who care, dead trees provide a habitat for animals and birds. Knocking over dead trees is illegal in parts of WA. Nor that it matters in the big scheme of things where humans are overrunning everything in their path. And they complain about cane toads!

Yes same in Victoria, no falling live or dead timber. I'm certainly no greeny but with
camping being so popular people need to get a little smarter with their wood collecting. Getting to
camp then looking around for wood is a fools game as inevitably there'll be none or it'll be too wet in the valleys. In the high country we collect all our wood off the ridges where it's both dry & plentiful. Often one needs to clear a tree off the track during the day anyway so just stick it up on the roof rack or in the back of a ute. It is certainly possible to have your fire & minimise the impact on an area. Stripping
camp sites of all dead wood & falling habitat trees only leads to fires being banned, something most people don't want.
Cheers Craig.............

I hate situations when a mate or accociate brags about some crap you totaly disagree with but they assume you just do the same. Wether its a stupid stunt, environomental (one guy I was with dumped rubbish in the bush in front of me and made a joke about it) or whatever else. You either potentially loose a mate or at least disturb the day, or let it slide. I recon the best thing to do is the head on approach if you have the guts.

F4,
I lost a good "mate" just like that for exactly that. He wouldn't, just WOULD NOT pick up his beer cans and take 'em with him. Just wouldn't, and he laughed at me when I made an issue out of it.
We parted company over that, after 11 years as prospecting mates.
Stuff him,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, and I've never regretted it either.

Had much the same thing happen with me. Used to go fishing with a group for about 8 years. One smoker who used to use a bin for the buts. Last trip he just threw the buts out of the tent onto the sand. At the end of the week I asked him to pick them up, response was as per expected, so I picked them up, a good hour. Told him when I had finished that was his last trip and he actually thought I was joking. That was four years ago. Never been fishing with him since. Come to think of it I don't think he has been fishing since.

Used to scavenge and collect campfire wood. Now I take a bundle of wood with me, dig a small hole and have a modest campfire.
Not as much fun as the hot flaming roasty fires of old... but we can't keep on doing this sort of thing. Tread lightly.

Had a mate one time push a tree over with his bull bar. Only problem he didnt back up quick enough, a big root come up out of the ground, flattened his sump and lifted his front
wheels off the ground!
That took a while getting him off.
Cheers

This is what i'm getting at the dangers!!. Friend of
mine was cleaning up around a house with a bobcat, just touched the base of a tall skinny dead tree with the bucket, and the top 3mtrs just fell off wiping out a verander rail on its way.
Cheers.
