If you had a few days spare (say 5 or even 7 days) and you had never been to either Island, which one would you go to first and why? Tenting it all the way with only 12 volt stuff and batteries capable of 3-5 days without recharge (No vehicle charging setup on my beast yet) but little Honda gennie available if permitted. The fishing needs to good wherever we go and I can catch sand worms if that is important.

Any seasoned islanders daring to give their opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks, Trevor.

Mate,
Use to go to Straddy with a mate and his family and it was a great place.
Now the de-caff soy latte mob have moved in!!

Moreton is the go though you have to be self sufficient.

If not, Straddy is still ok if you camp on the beach.

Go Moreton if you can.

Cheers

"Now the de-caff soy latte mob have moved in!!" .........Sounds right up my missus's alley :-))

I like the sound of Moreton from most answers here.
Thanks, Trevor.

Hi Trev

I'd say Moreton hands down if you are looking for the remote experience. No bitumen roads and few shops.

Straddie on the other hand has a lot of bitumen and limited beach camping areas. Added to that they pulled the Straddie Hotel down so there is not much point going there anymore.

I think Straddie if you want access when you want it to shops to top up on luxuries.

Moreton if you don't mind the bounce of real 4WD tracks, massive man eating sandworms, usually great fishing (but f*** all when I went in Nov) and noooo shops, facilities etc.

Straddie .
The barge is way cheaper .
Its way closer.
There are bitumen roads.
Its only an annual $32 permit to drive on the beach.
Ocean beach camping is as good as anywhere else.
Beach fishing and at the pin is great.
Abundant worms .

I'll keep you posted but it is just a question at this stage :-))) Looking for somewhere to run the Blizzard without the drive at 80kph to get anywhere. The Islands fit this bill nicely.

Sounds like Moreton would suit my style better but Straddie (complete with shops) would suit Judy more.....decisions decisions.

Cheers, Trevor.

Straddie certainly falls into the 'right' catagory for everyones needs. Not too much offroad driving though. Most of the beaches are good to drive, with only 1 sand track through the island however, a good feed at the pub makes up for this :o) I've heard that the Pub is under renovations at the moment so can't comment on it's service right now. Keep me posted if you want someone to help pull you out ;o)

I should really answer the question so if it's 5-7 days fishing & camping, then I'd go Moreton :o)

"Not too much offroad driving though"

Don't say that too loud or there won't even be a choice as Judy will take the soft option every time LOL!!

Moreton it is hey? LOL!!
Fill you in as it comes.

Moreton , you will need to be pretty self sufficient though ,, tenting ??? the new beaut camp ground at north point is the pick ,only camp ground that has mown grass ,, fuel at Bulwer ,$1.59 for diesel ,$1.56 ulp , ice $5.50 per block {5kg} ,, campsites at nth point have to be booked /reserved thru QPS , same for camps Bulwer to Cowan ,, anywhere else 1st in best dressed , gennie any where you like as long as your there before the fool who wants to complain , face the exhaust towards the ocean and no one can hear it anyway over the sound of the surf , fishing ??? if you cant catch a feed on Moreton sell your rods and take up tiddlywinks as your sport,,

Thanks Alloy,
I did read your report on your Moreton trip when doing some homework on these two islands. It definately appears like Moreton will suit me better. So how are you at tiddlywinks? cause if there is anyone that can't catch fish on Moreton, I am sure to be that person hahahahaha.

Best regards, Trevor.

Alloy, Your two, plus my one problem make three. My old bus (not the Patrol) only goes flat out at 80kph and the drive from Brissy to Fraser would take the week I have up my sleeve :-)))))
Plus I've been to Fraser a few times and am looking for somewhere new and closer for the old Blizzard to show me what it is made of (probably not much LOL!!!)

Thanks for the suggestion anyway dornbus.
Cheers, Trevor.

The resort at Tangalooma doesnt like campers (I havent been there for a few years so things might have changed) but if you take a half decent set of clothes, you can stroll in, buy a meal and have a drink at the resort - might keep the missus happy

For a once-off, Moreton. If you are going in a busy period (eg. school hols) then I'd reconsider - straddie has heaps of great spots down main beach and I don't think Moreton has the same sort of choice. Somewhere like north point would be too busy and defeat the purpose of camping if you ask me.

Straddy is more relaxed since it isn't national park (managed by redlands council). You can even take a dog.
Straddie is easier to get to and has facilities to fall back on.... but ultimately I'd go for Moreton. There's more to see on Moreton and it definitely has a "remote" feeling to it.

Whats wrong with Bribbie Island. No ferry costs,a lot cheaper to camp, good drive up the beach, as for fishing well like everywhere take pot luck.

I would have to say Moreton. We've done Fraser, Straddie and Moreton and my wife who likes the soft option and fishing has asked how soon can we go back to Moreton. Also at Moreton a couple of the camping areas have showers and toilets which can be a bonus for the female types.
The Mi-Cat (I have no connection with) is a top way of getting over there very comfy.

Cheers

Craig

Trevor, if u havnt been to moreton, u must go. Going on the micat is like travelling overseas on an oceian liner, once u get to Moreton, u can't see the mainland, I felt it was so remote, I cld have been anywhere OS. (Like PNG) there is this big black snake that hangs around, yuk. The island is 3 times more expensive than straddie, but make sure you time the tides right or have a chair close by and cold drinks to do the wait, as the beach is unpassable on a high tide, unless u want to drive in the sea, usually the vehicles that get off first don't so u hve to wait too. The tangalooma have my wine and lovely meals, but recent reports suggest otherwise. Check out kooringle gutter bar for the best seafood eva. For the camping exerience where you are guaranteed privacy, alas it is still Fraser. Let us know how your trip goes pls.
