Hello All
I thought I read something about guterless roof racks and sealing around the bolt holes and mounts to stop water from leaking past them. Anyone had any experience with this one ?
Thanks
Brad.

Yep.
Mine originally leaked. I dipped the bolts in Silastic before replacing them. Its been fine since.

Be very careful of weight and type of roofrack fitted as if the rack is too stiff or there is too much weight combined with outback travel then cracks develop in the roof which causes leaks as well.

The potential for leaks with a gutterless mount must be reduced by making sure you seal every bolt in the mountings and it's surroundings. If a reasonable amount of water gets down inside the door pillars etc and wets even the door lock coils it creates havoc with the whole car electronic systems. It even sends the engine managemnet system crazy.

My mate left the bolts out compeletly on his 100 Series V8 'Cruiser when he removed his roof rack - he was "gonna put 'em back another day". It poured down the next day. It cost a fortune to sort the mess out. There were lights coming up on the dashnboard that he didn't even know he had!! It was like being inside a video game!!

I laughed but he didn't think it was funny at all,,,,,,,,,,,,,,so I laughed even more.

You had to be there!!

Yep ... the water comes down the A, B, C and D pillars ... if you don't seal the bolts.

I bought mine with the leak ;-)

Use Sikaflex rather than normal silastic. It's the stuff used by manufacturer's and panel shops. It's available at Bunnings. A bit more expensive but its great stuff. It stores well in the fridge.
