Hi All

I am looking for some advice on batteries, I have an electric fence running off 12v, have been powering it from my old n70z batteries that had come out of my 4wd and tractor. I have no idea how much the unit _Affordable_Storage_Drawers.aspx, I usually leave a battery on it for a week and then swap it and put the battery on a cheapie arlec charger I have. My question is what would be the best battery to put on it to power it and what would be the best AFFORDABLE charger to get as I gather from the archives that I should have a 3 stage charger or something. Some basic advice would be appreciated. I did see refernce to a Jaycar charger that wasnt too expensive

Thanks

I would suggest an agm battery perhaps using a small solar panel 20 wat or something similar. then you dont have to worry about the battery going flat? if you're looking for an afforadle charger then a ctek automatic charger is you're best option.

Why do you want to change from what you're currently doing?

That's true - discharging a 12V lead acid battery below about 10V5 is lightly to significantly shorten it's life but I understood you to be saying the batteries you are using are ex vehicle batteries and therefore, presumably, already pretty stuffed?

The solution mentioned with a solar panel (you don't need an expensive AGM for this application) and battery is a good one but will cost - why not just run crappy old batteries on a round robin basis on your existing charger? Are the stock getting out? If not then I guess the fence is working?

Zapper you can get a solar energizer which is a battery, energizer and solar panel in one. You should be able to get one from any rural supplier who sells electric fence stuff. Size and cost will depend on length of fence. It's a few years since I used this sort of stuff, but one for 2 KM of fence should be under $300.

Alternatively, for 20 KM of electric fence here is one on eBay for $485. Probably others there as well if you have a look:
