hi
Couple of queries re the still new
kimberley karavan as we are looking hard at one - and interested to know a couple of things before we shell out the big $ - from those who already have one
(1) Any noticeable internal diesel smell from the diesel cooking system
(2) Whats the dust penetration like inside the van when travelling on dirt roads with the top down etc and set up for travel
(3) Whats the external noise control like for sleeping inside with the top up, bed out etc (as some caravan parks can be very noisy at night with loud TVs etc) - does it keep the noise out pretty
well when the door is shut etc or is it more like the
kimberley kamper (which we do have) and you get to listen to all the surrounding noise in a caravan
park - which is one good reason why we try to avoid busy caravan parks
thanks in advance greg

OT; but with a "off-road" van like this/these, why do you want to stay in c/van parks (we find it MUCH better to use the attributes of our off-road camper to stay right away from those
places unless we absolutely have to go there)......
Sorry, just my thoughts.......you would be buying a van that can get you away from the masses........if you want to stay in a c/van
park, why not get a suitable "standard" caravan?
I would imagine you would still get to hear all the normal
park noises.....even the "solid" walls of a standard c/van would still let a lot of noise through IMHO.
Cheers and good luck with your decision......(sorry again if I sound negative)....
Roachie

roachie no issues mate
as i have said to the other guys i am lucky enough to be a migraine sufferer so noise and smell can be a real issue for me at times mate and particularly after a long drive
and yes we do have a 2004 KK classic mariner which we do use off road but we also do stay overnight at caravan parks at times when travelling to and from where we want to get to i.e the cape and
darwin etc
so hence the interest in how the KK Karavan minimises nose in a busy caravan
park or a
well used road side
rest area etc cause that is quite important for us and we are weighing it up to some extent against a bushtracker 16 ft etc - and yes i know the bushtracker is real bloody heavy option but may be the way we have to go
its always hard to get the perfect compromise
all the best
see you mate
best regards greg
and PS the
forum would be the lesser without guys like you and truckster mate
but as i said without the GU 3.0 TD's blowing up all the time bruce is at a bit of a loose end these days - the passion seems to have gone

Greggu,
I've spent five nights in
mine on a shakedown over xmas so far. Delivered in mid November.
A very, very small diesel smell when first starting the cooktop. Nothing that concerns me. Also warned campers in tent next door re fumes from the exhaust but they weren't bothered by any smell.
With regards to the dust penetration. Each unit is checked before leaving the factory by being evacuated and sprayed with talcum powder around all seals. This is part of the guarantee. Also each van now has a pressure induction hatch fitted to the front of the roofline. I haven't been on the dirt as yet but this was a main point with the design to seal the unit from dust.
Noise.
Well I was sleeping twenty metres from a pounding surf and on a strange new mattress and ambient lighting level. After the third night I started to get used to the new surroundings so I don't think the noise should be a problem. I guess in a close
camping environment some noise will happen some times. I guess this was also designed so you can keep away from van parks and
camp somewhere independantly. Thats what all the technology is about and the energy options.
So far I'm prettty happy with the overall design and functionality. The weather was variable. Wind, rain and high heat and humidity so it was a good first shakedown trip.
Another to a
bush camping place for Australia day coming up.
Cheers
Garth

Greg, I hadn't seen this one earlier. Bruce (Truckster) must restrain himself.
ans (1) I have noticed a smell if I started the cooktop in the garage as
well I might. There is so little being burnt though it doesn't seem intrusive.
ans (2) never seen dust admitted. It is seen to be a potential by non users/owners. I have heard they are looking to change the type of air filter though for the charge air inlet to allow more air at lower speeds. That should counteract any dust entry even more. I have not heard that confirmed by KK however.
ans(3) The other day at
Robe I found by closing the windows there was a slightly lower noise level which indicates a better than nothing reduction in noise with the insulation
I do like to use the outside wok burner for cooking and the electric hot
water over my diesel if I have paid a powered site fee ;-) Plenty hot enough, but it doesn't heat the space heater like the diesel powered hot
water does I found.
Greg, I find they are vitally interested in any feedback we give. That is a real positive for the future developments.

the
forum would be the lesser with out truckster
but he has been a bit lost now the GU 3.0 TD dont blow up any more
thanks for the comments as i said to garth unfortunately i am a migraine suffer and noise and at times
bright lights are real bad news for me often particularly after a long drive - hence the inquiry re diesel small and noise
i have a 2004 KK classic mariner which is now a good tough piece of gear and we do use it off road but often stay in caravan parks on the way to or back from our preferred spots
thanks again for the feed back

Tongue in cheek on our Bruce mate. Dunno how many hours we may have spent round but we know each other
well. Bruce will always find a 3 litre somewhere.
I do notice the smell if I am near the exhaust but not out in the open from within the van. As I said before if you are in a CVP you use their power for your hot
water and the a/c.......... :-)

yes john I kind of figured you may be
well acquainted with the truckster
and thanks for the replies
i guess if i had some feedback to give KK in the future and mind you i am only a looker not yet an owner -
i would suggest they might look at where they can mount the KK folding boat trailer on the Karavan
and maybe strengthen the roof and put a small roof rack up on it to carry light bulky extra gear such as the annex etc
and maybe also look at fitting some noise insulation panels or special noise reducing seals between the two halves - nylex make a whole range of noise reducing materials that can probably do that job
but as you say its a pretty brilliant concept in its own right already
thanks again and my best regards - enjoy your karavan mate
see you greg

Greg, it would be pretty easy to upset the balance of the K'van with additions and also add to the weight when they are really needing to keep it down. The annex currently resides in the boot of the KK, but they specify a maximum of 45kg there from memory. Not heaps of room. I know some have added a rack for solar panel and the like at the front .
