We are
well set up with 12 Volt power and light. We have enough plug in 12 volt lights to light up a small town!!!
I'm now looking for a portable lantern that we can use away from our 12 Volt supply. I guess there are 3 alternatives. Gas, rechargable battery and dual fuel. I'd probably rule out gas (though I still have one from my early
camping days) as they are a bit less portable and have fragile mantles.
That being the case, which is better, rechargable battery or dual fuel. I'm after something good and sturdy that will suit our off road type travel and
camping. It needs to be easy to pack (not requiring wrapping in cotton wool). Also needs to supply enough light to easily read by.
What do you recommend and why?
Thanks
Norm C

Good afternoon Norm, I just got an Oz trail rechargable for xmas off some friends, have only charged it up and havn't used it yet in the bush. However, it does light up the back yard area quite
well while we are having a bbq tea at home.Seems quite sturdy, robust and comes with all the chargers. I guess time will tell. cheers unc.

The handiest light that I have without a doubt is a 60 LED rechargable work light,
charges from 12v or 240v & stays in the vehicle 24/7.

Hey Shaker, you got any info on your light. A web site link would be handy if you have one.

Can use it as an area light or torch & doesn't attract bugs!

At the moment I am looking at a couple of LED models which have brilliant battery life .

Thanks for the links Willie. If I get a battery one, the LEDs might be the way to go. But I'd prefer one with an inbuilt rechargable battery rather than D Cells. Just plug it in when driving.
We are heading for the Cape this winter. Leave in late April and expect to get home late July / early August. Got to get back by then as we have booked a trip to Japan in August to visit our daughter who is working over there for a couple of years.
Shares are doing
well, but I've cashed out of a lot with the market so high at the moment. Preservation of capital is more important than growth for me at the moment as it is my super fund and I'll be able to draw on it in a couple of years. Got into NMS (via NMSO) a couple of months back while they were down. Up 210% since then.

Norm ,
There are re-chargeable LED lanterns and they are the ducks guts .
I am nearly out of the market , but must continue to have a toe in to avoid boredom .
Have a great time on the Cape.
Willie .

I don't have a gas light but I'm told that if you spray the mantle with hair spray and it holds it together so replacement isn't required as frequently.

Used Gas for years, then went to petrol light, but you still have mantels, but no friggin gas, good light.
Now use all 12v, quick and easy,
mine are all car plugged, but have a battery pack if we want light somewhere else, but a rechargable lantern would be great, some come with remote controls so you can turn them off and on at
camp from the fire say!
Cheers Pesty

Still use gas ( as
well as led lights off the CT batt ) and haven't changed a mantle for over 8 trips ( KK CT )
Got rid of the glass and replaced with mesh though.
CT came with two gas bottles, may as
well use them!

Hi Norm,
The obvious question is why? Or are you planning to get lost from the car? I found that those battery powered leds to be fantastic, bought one recently that has 3 LED lights and it is pretty darn good for LED and I reckon even with my poor eyesight I could read with it. Got no idea how long the battery will last but I suspect a while. I have the head band type, a torch and one neat little one that fits in the ciggie lighter (love that one - its always there and handy)
Didn't answer your question I know but just another thought.
Kind regards

I have a LED headband one too and I just cannot believe how long the batteries last . They must be putting the battery companies out of business !

G'day Willie,
Me too! My latest is a replacement for one that I abused for a long time and the switch became a problem other than that it was still going.
Kind regards

I was using
mine to work on the Paj the other night and came inside having left it on the bonnet face down and still turned on. I was looking for it the following evening, back tracked and found it still there and burning brightly.
I like it.

Well guys, I lashed out today and bought a Coleman Dual Fuel light. The big Northstar model. Normally $199 to $229. BCF have them on special for $169 and my locally owned
camping store (where I do most of my shopping) matched the price.
I wanted something now as we are heading off for a couple of weeks of fishing this Sunday. Otherwise I probably would have got one of the 60 LED rechargable lights from eBay (and still might).
Looked at all the rechargables in the
shop and there is a massive range. Disgarded any that use D cell or other types of standard batteries. That left the ones with a good rechargable battery. Some looked good, but not a lot of 'area light'. I reckon you would just about need to have it sitting on the table with you to read by. Also, in a moment of candor the retailer commented that with heavy use, you can only expect 2 or 3 years use out of the battery.
I mentioned the Coleman dual fuel and straight away he said 'now you are talking about a good light'. Reassured me about the mantle life (said he took one to the Cape a couple of years ago - destroyed the chassis on his 4B, but is still using the mantle). Reckons it is fine to run it on ULP, but burn some Shellite or Coleman fuel in it every now and then to clear out any carbon build up in the generator.
Anyway, that's what I got. Just hope it was money
well spent. As always I spent about twice as much as I planned.
