Hello,

I have just fitted a TJM XGS a Suspension package to my 2004 Nissan Patrol. My concept was to receive a 50mm (2inch) lift with the new suspension. When it rolled out of the workshop it was actually a 85mm lift (3 inch). After completing 500km it was remeasured and I still have around 85mm. Do I require a caster correction kit for such a large change in lift. The patrol was fitted without it and nothing has been said by TJM that I would need it. The vehicle runs fine and has now immediate problems. What does the 4WDing community of EXPLOROZ think?

Cheers in advance

Dave

It may pay to have an independant inspection done by a reputable dealer. I had a 50mm lift for my Cruiser and I needed the castor kit to be fitted. I had real problems when braking, especially emergency braking but the castor kit fixed it.

85mm is a big lift and 35 mm is a lot to drop if you are waiting for it to settle down to 50mm.

My thoughts anyway.

i have a 50mm lift in my cruiser, when i first lifted it it drove ok

However on the h/way and driving through the hills it wanted to oversteer and didn't corner the best

After the correction bushes were installed it felt the way it used to be before the lift

Castor is your Directional stability it is a non wearing angle, if you feel it drives ok just leave it

Thanks luch,

I originally fitted Goodyear Wrangler MTR's. Since then my wife hasn't enjoyed the drive. SInce the suspension upgrade, the ride is apparenly better. I never felt the difference but must admit it drives nicely now, feels very smooth and tight.

The old suspension had 43,000 km on them, of which about 8000km was used for touring with our camper trailer CSR, Tanami etc. Maybe the 85mm lift measured from TJM is actually around the 50mm due to the old shocks and springs being old???.

Thanks for your feed back.

Dave

You shouldn't need the castor kit

Currently standard, opting for a 3 inch in a few weeks. Business is going well thanks.

Hi mate,

I mentioned it below but I got a great price from TJM. $300 cheaper that the other operators up here in Darwin. $1250 included the fitment so I went with them as I have had their suspension in my Disco when I had that. Apparently it is a standard price they have (like a kit price). You might have more options your way but it is rather limited up here.

If I do go with a caster kit (still don't know yet) I will probably go online and order a 2 degree caster kit on e-bay for $140

Hows Townsville going these days, we lived there for 10 years and miss it somewhat.

Best price I got was from ARB and that will be the way I go. They were pretty helpful in all respects.

Townsville is going ahead rapidly on the back of the resources boom. New developments everywhere. 4500 new houses in my area this year, and must be 20,000 new houses since I moved here.

The Strand development is fantastic, and now they are doing the same sort of thing on the Ross River with lagoon style pools and cultural centre and walkways and cafes.

Your original suspension is probably sagged an inch so it's now 2 inch above standard, if it drives ok don't worry about it normally Patrols don't need it, toyota's do!

I seemed to have received a very good deal from TJM in reguards to the suspension. I got quotes from ARB and OL and found TJM around $300 cheaper ($1250 for the lot including steering damper) with fitment.

Thanks mate,

Sound good. I parked beside a standard Patrol today and did a rough measurement between the two. All up it was around two inches but the comparison vehicle was a new patrol with 17 inch rubber. Mine should even out with the 265/75/16 Muddies on though. Over all I am starting to feel good about it being a 2 inch, and not a 3 inch lift.

Your data would be great to read for peace of mind though.

Thanks in advance

front passenger/drivers side before the lift
740/755

rear

770/780

after the lift
front
806/805
rear
840/845

given the second battery and engel live on the passeneger side I'm happy with the end result. This weekend we are heading to Echuca and for a drive around the Barmah Forrest to try it out. I have noticed when driving it home yesterday it seems to be very direct in the steering. I beleive it is better than before which may be attributed to either the caster bushes or suspension or possibly both. Having a look at the end result I would have no problems fitting the Caster bushes myself as I have access to a press.

Regards Dave

Thanks for the info madcow,

I am siding for the castor correction as I have just rotated the tyres and had them rebalanced with the results of the steering feeling a little spongy. Have a nice trip this long weekend.
