Never heard of that , wouldn't be much point , as detroits are available for front , better and easier

Yeah agree, leave the LSD in the back and just stick a Detroit in the front.

As for swapping the LSD to the front, well the 2 diffs/ Carriers would need to be identical, which I doubt they are.

Big subject Boc, many posts have been made about it, My conclusion
is that ARB is better overall but needs more maintenance.

I evaluate things against critera of "what will take me further overall"
and "Unlockers" have issues or slippery surfaces which I encounter a bit.

The detriot is a premium unlocker and has less issues than lokka type
and I had lokka (lockright) in my patrol before going to ARB.

With the unlocker I spent more time in 2wd because of its tendency to
lock front wheels under power and understeer. The unlock mechanism
often can't unlock and allow the differential action to take
place when very slippery , whereas the ARB can be switched off.

Still in many circumstances the unlocker in the front worked very
well and was a value for money product.

Leave the LSD in the rear, it works so don't stuff with it (unless it is stuffed). Unless you want to eventually put one in the rear as well. I have mine in the front and LSD remaining in the rear and it works a treat.....Save you a heap of hassle.....My 2 cents...

Yep, Teabag's on the money there........Nissan's LSD is bullet proof (even toyota owners have to admit THAT), so you don't need to muck about. Whack the Air Locker up front and you'll be sweet as a nut!!!!

Hey Teabag, nice rig I'm biased though i have the exact same rig with the same mods, from the 285BFG to snorkel, truck colour, ARB Diff lock up front and 2" suspension lift, it was great looking at your photos now I know what mine will look like with tinted windows and roof racks if I was to fit them.

On your profile you mentioned getting rock crawler gears, I have been looking at the Marks low range transfer case conversion, from memory you can get a choice of either a 24% 47% or 80% reduction. The guys I use for mods have an 80% reduction kit in stock and are keen to fit it, though my concern is, is it too low? Well not for the bush I already know that, but for the sand driving, at the moment most of my 4wding is in low range because those bloody 285 BFG"s has thrown my gearing out and high range is way to high for the bush or thick sand.

So this means I will loose the low range for sand driving I assume as it will be too low.

Teabag whats your opinion and experience with your truck so far, and do you know any one who has had there gearing modified in our model trucks.

I would look forward to hearing from you as our trucks are kitted out the same.

Regards,
Babs.

Babs,

Firstly, thank you for your kind comments.

Experience with sand driving in this truck has been limited has there isn't too much sand driving in Canberra. In the one weekend I spent at Stockton Beach with the new Patrol I was in High range all day and didn't need to go to low range at all. WRT the bigger tyres, yes this has lost a little down low/off the mark but since installing the 3in Mandrel bent exhaust and dump pipe (worth every cent in the 4.2TDi) what was lost has been regained. The reason want the rock crawler gears is due to the poor low range ratio which I feel isn't anywhere near low enough for real bush work. Now I could change diff ratio's but this affects everything though if I only change the Low range crawler gear then I still have my good highway running but far better low range ability in the bush. Going to the bigger tyres also compounds the run on that you get when in low range one coming down hill thus having to be on the brakes a little which isn't the best idea and should be avoided if possible....
I have been more than happy with the new truck though my only beef is low range isn't low enough thus the reason for wanting to install the rock crawler gears. Good luck with your truck, where do you live (area) and it would be good to see some pictures of your truck. All the best and feel free if you have any further questions. My email is on my profile.........

I'll put a plug in for the 2.86:1 ratio (43% reduction over the standard low range gearing). To me, this was a good compromise....the 85% reduction was just too low as far as I was concerned, but great if you're running 44" tyres and doing a lot of rock-hopping etc.

I'm very happy with them and will be transferring them from my old Patrol to the new rig in early February (along with the front diff locker).

Cheers

Roachie

G'day Brian, I put a systems lokka in the front of my mates GU and he loves it.
Don't even know its there until you notice the extra 80% traction.
I have one in my 4runner as well and it's great, so much so that I didn't bother with the rear, just left the s.t.d. l.s.d. in there.
And as we all know Toyota L.S.D's don't work, and Nissan's do.

Am I being a sirry plick in thinking that putting a full time diff lock in the front diff makes the steering harder?

When you are driving normally with the hubs free-wheeling it will not make one scrap of difference. With it in 4WD and the hubs engaged it depends on the type of locker an air locker that is not turned on, will not make much difference, an automatic locker such as Detroit, I don't know for sure but would think it will make steering a little harder. And with the air-locker engaged, your steering is pretty limited, more crabbing than steering.

I believe the rear LSD from a Pathfinder will fit the front Patrol diff housing if you want to go that way - sorry but I don't know from which year Pathfinder to which year Patrol.

But as Truckster suggests - do it right the first time.
