Im thinking about an intercooler for the 100 series, but want to hear first hand of who has a 1HZ Turbo Intercooler and what the power output is.

Has any one got some figures or experience ?

Cost ?

Would you recommend it ?

I have a Denco unit guess it would be around 130 kw at the flywheel at the moment

Hi there,

Not sure about flywheel figures, but I'm now on my second turbo intercooled 1HZ 100 series cruiser and have rear wheel figures for both. The first was a Safari kit on a constant 4WD GXL and it put out 76.2kw at all fours. After a bit of trouble with a water crossing, my new STD 100 series with an AXT kit, is putting out 82.1kw at the rear wheels. Makes a big difference from the non turbo 1HZ, sorry I can't help with non intercooled figures but can say I don't have trouble with temp increases when slow going and towing in deep sand. Seems to be the more reliable way to go for a long term vehicle.

Cheers, Rossco.

Rossco i have a Genuine intercooler from a 100 series and have a price for all the genuine Ducts and hoses from toyota for $800 (i will need to make a few small mods but thats no problem)

How much boost pressure are you running ?

1hz 80series - 35" tyres - 4th gear

standard form = 55.1hp (1st dyno run)
turbo/intercooler - 2nd dyno run / tuning stage (6psi) = 75.8hp
final dyno run (12 psi / pre-egt 500c max) = 117.6hp

Then I have fitted a 3" dump pipe and straight through exhaust, and power has come up even more. Havent dynoed it yet.

Hey Luke,

I'm running 11.5 to 12 p.s.i. boost. The dyno figures were taken with the GXL running BFG 33in all terrains and the STD running 35in BFG mud terrains, so that probably skews the figures a bit. Should have mentioned that mines a water to air intercooler, with full 3in mandrel exhaust and a fuel enrichment aneroid.

Good day there,
Just to throw a spanner in the works, if your donk is in good conditions why don't you consider swapping over to a factory turbo engine. Spend some time looking around and you can find some occasionally from wreckers etc....., sell your engine and near to the cost difference you will get a much better engine if its power you are after. The factory turbo will be superior to whatever you do with the 1hz, believe me I've tried. You can get some really good figures with the 1hz but they wont last.

Not worth it

I would need to put in a 1HD-t or a 1HD-FT

A turbo 1HZ will put out more power than both these motors, the only advantage you would gain is Fuel Economy

You are right though, but to do the conversion is not worth doing unless i needed to replace the motor

I still would look around for a second hand 1HD-FT and sell the 1HZ, having had both they are miles apart, a heavily modified 1HZ will probably get between 80 to 90 kw at the wheels and this will be a stressed motor running around 15psi boost. A 1HD-FT with intercooler will probably give around 110kw at the wheels and be much more reliable as the engine has been developed from the ground up as a turbo, different pistons, direct injection, 24 valves etc........ Its your call and I can only base my information on my experiences.
