Willem,

About 12 years ago, I could make good money at it.

About 7 years ago, I was taking "paying gold tourists" out with me, plus prospecting out to make only a living.

About 5 years ago I was just about breaking even on costs

About 4 years ago I got a full time job.

About 20 months ago I retired.

Now I do it just for fun. Can't cover costs any more, or maybe I can get enough to cover the fuel - maybe but don't bank on it.

So to answer your question - Yes, there's still some out there, but not enough to make money at it. It's more aptly described as "a way of going camping for free!!"

Bilbo,
Maybe your going to the wrong places........ I would love to go to some of the places I went to 10 years ago with one of these new machines. A few years ago my cousin found the evening star. sold it for 800k. If all goes well I hope to be travelling this vast country 6 months of the year and having a look for colour for a couple of months.
I have a bit around my neck that I have been offered 4 figures for and it wihs nothing. Go figure...........
I dream every day of the time I can hang out in the "bush" relaxing, eating good food and knowing that nature is your friend........

Extfilm,

Things like the "Evening Star" are still around. They always will be, and there'll always be someone lucky enough (or used a bulldozer to dig deep enough!) to find one.

But as a general rule, there isn't the consistency of findings that would make prospecting attractive to anybody but a dedicated gold fever freak - like I used to be and like my wife IS!!

As for not going to the right places,,,,,,,,I can still find enough to cover fuel, but like 99% of full time, serious prospectors, I gave it away years ago as way of making a living. These guys know what they're doing and where they need to go, they know more than most geologists and have bulldozers etc. It just ain't there anymore in any quantity. A lot of guys went broke about 4 years after the 'new tech' machines came out. Every tourist and his dog has been in places that were unheard of 10 years ago. I know,,,,,,,,,,I see thier tin cans and crrapp way out in "indian country". You wouldn't believe how many caravans you see out there these days and the bulk of 'em are new chums at it and mainly baby boomers with the money. The glory days are well & truly over.

By "glory days", I mean making $1500.00 A DAY, EVERY DAY in 1995/6. 20 ounces a week back then - like clockwork

Found one! And another, and another - it got a bit passe after a while!

Now yer lucky if ya find 20 grammes a week!!

Ah memories,,,,,,,,,

Bilbo

Bilbo,
You know the story of the evening star then? The bobcat did not come until after it was found on the surface as far as I can recall..... But the machine he was using only did a depth of maybe 8 inches........ Now days the new one is said to go down 3 foot..... Is this correct? If so then I can only presume that some of the deeper ground can still produce some good size bits?
I know u have been out to the same area I have and I am sure u been to the specking patch for which I am proud to have a bit from there too.

Extfilm,

The depth that a "new" detector will go to is affected by many factors, but yes they will go down "3 feet" if the nugget is big enough to be "heard". They won't pick up tiny bits at 3 feet. The term "Big enough" would be someehere up around 10 ounces! There's not too many of them bits left these days ;)

I hear you say "The Specking Patch" - it's been done like a dinner. It's "Touristville". It's almost the unofficial overpsill caravan park for Leonora!! Three tenths of seven eigths of nothing left on it.

Prospecting is now a game for holiday makers or land speculators.

Gidday Willem

I can't post the following because technology has decided older people need a challenge.

Can you post the following on my behalf? I think we both share an interest in good bush yarns. Many thanks.

Change the intro as you see fit.

Cigarettes, corked whisky and hard nosed women

Eighteen bottles of whisky

The old bushie had 18 bottles of whisky in his cellar and, after a particularly rowdy night, his long-suffering wife insisted he pour every single bottle down the sink or she would leave him. That afternoon he stood in the pub and told his mates of the horrible experience.

'Reluctanty, I start on my unpleasant task as I withdrew the first cork and commenced pouring the whisky down the sink, I could'nt help myself from drinking a glass first. I withdrew the cork from the second bottle and did likewise with it and scoffed yet another glass. I withdrew the cork from the third bottle and poured the contents down the sink, which I drank. I pulled the cork from the fourth and drank the sink out of it, then threw the bottle down the glass. I pulled the sink out of the next glass and poured the cork down the bottle. Then I corked the sink with the glass, bottled the drink and drank the house. Then, when I had everything emptied, I steadied the house with one hand, counted the glasses, corks, bottles and sinks (which came to twenty-nine) and, as the house came by again, I counted them all again and finally had all the houses in the one bottle which I then drank'

The old timer looked at the puzzled assembly and added: 'I am not under the ofluence of incohol as some thinkle peep I am. I am not half as thunk as you drink I am. I don't know who is me and the drunker I stand the longer I get it!?
