Twinkles
Went to local exhaust fitter to enquire price of 2 1/2 inch mandrel bend exhaust from back of turbo for my Hilux. The car was put on the hoist and I looked with the mechanic as he explained. There doesn't seem to be a replacable dump pipe or catalyst thingy on my 2004 3ltr turbo. There is a cast iron housing at the back of the turbo which is not like a pipe. The exhaust bolts onto this.
Can anyone who knows this motor explain what should be replaced when doing an exhaust upgrade? Should I pay the extra and get mandrel bends? Is stainless steel worth the extra as
well?

Ok, I run the 3 ltr 1KZ-TE motor, I'm pretty sure being a 2004 you'd have the d4d so it might be a little different.
When I bought
mine I installed a Lukey Performance muffler, got rid of the rear muffler and had it 2.5" from the dump pipe to the back.
Recenty after trying to stop exaust "squeaks" I removed the muffler all together and was AMAZED with the power increase.
So $80 later I had the local mob whack on some 2.5" from the turbo straight out (normal bends, but not many and only shallow) and am happier than ever.
To be completley honest it is now quieter in the cab while driving than it was with the muffler. The muffler used to drone while you were cruising and because it was right under you you could hear it quite a bit. The new straight through setup is much much louder when you stand outside the car at the back (sounds very cool actually), but in the car it's quieter, you cannot really hear it unless you wind the back window down then it's quite noticbable.
The guys that did it for me reckon it's quite common on Turbo Diesel's to just chuck the muffler because it causes a lot less restriction, they don't get clogged up with soot and the turbo creates enough back pressure for the engine and also baffles the sound a little making it quite reasonable.
So in short, spend $80 bucks not $800 and I reckon you'll be better off! ;-)
It's also fun to watch
home video's of your 4by tackling big sand drunes when your little 4 cylinder sounds like a Hino 12 tonner! LOL.
