Hi,

I notice that the GU 4.2 diesel has tappet adjustment scheduled every 20k. It was done via dealer at 60k I checked it at 80k with almost no difference. Now milage is 110k and would rather wait until 120k to check, so this time will be 40k.

Do you think this is to long?? Has your experience been that the gaps on this particular engine really do move that much and need doing every 20k?

Thanks

I guess the answer is, they pay people millions to design cars, and design maintainence schedules for them, and if they wanted you to adjust the tappets every 40k they would have put it in the book. yes the gaps will change, and performance and economy can change, as the enginge will not run to maximum efficiency, but its your engine!

Guys, I'm well aware of processes and procedures and how and why they are developed, specifically in an engineering context.

I'm after actual experience from owners of this specific engine, do they really need adjustment every 40k.

For example you could buy genuine oil filters for this motor at over $70 or buy Z9 filters at less than $10. Sure the quality control may not be as good but the filtration is better. Have done this and had the oil tested, results are that I could double the oil service interval if I wanted.

So I'm not after text book answers I know these, I'm after experience from those that may have noticed from doing their own servicing.

Hi Austravel

I had mine done first service, then I done them @40,000 Ks they were a bit noisy by then. Car has 120,000ks on it now & the tappets sound ok. Its just a wait & listen thing for me, as you can tell when they need doing as there also a change in exhaust note. I personally wouldnt worry about doing until they need it. Nissan could have add the tappets into the service schedule to help the workshops bottom line $$$$ along as well????

Cheers Steve.

Austravel

Ive had 6 patrols 4 of them 4.2s all with high Ks on them & never had problems with tappets. This TD6 I have at the moment has been the best of the lot, has never been back for any warranty problems & I do the services, you just cant beat a basic old clunker that keeps on going & goes well too boot??

My 2 bobs worth for the day.

See ya Steve.

Thanks Steve,

I think I'll do that, wait until the 120k service and check them, if their fine after 40k then I'll extend the intervals to 40k instead of 20k.

Thanks
