Feral pigs culled to protect
Cape York turtle nests

About 10,000 feral pigs have been shot on
Cape York Peninsula, in far north Queensland, to save a colony of nesting turtles.
The joint aerial shoot by the Natural Resources Department, Wildlife Service and
Cape York Feral Animals Program has been conducted over six weeks along coastline on the western side of the cape.
The department's senior zoologist, Dr Jim
Mitchell, says feral pigs are decimating
turtle nests.
"Some work has been done, they estimate up to 70 per cent of all the
turtle nests are predated on by feral pigs, that's on an average basis," he said.
"But in some areas up to 100 per cent of nests are actually predated on by pigs."
