Hey all.
I have a 93 80 series standard wagon in diesel. Never had any gear issues before but in the past few months I have developed a clunk/grind resistance on the 2nd to 3rd shift. No where else. I can baby it in with no problem but if it is under load so to speak it is a pain. any guess as to what I am looking at repair wise ? I will be off to a
shop but don't want to get raped in the process.
As always thanks.
Andy

Mate it sounds like you have worn out the 3rd gear syncro. This was a common problem with the early 80 series. I know of several people that had it replaced under warranty in the early 90's. And some that have been done twice.

Hi Andy
You might get a bit more life out of it if you use Castrol VMX-M, it is a oil that was developed for Mitsubishi but works great in the Cruiser. But all good things come to an end and eventually they die, my box has just started to do the same thing and some time in the next month or so I will have to get it done, I am happy though it has done 350,000 Ks and I thrash it.
I have heard between $1,000 and $2,000 but I really have no idea, we have a gearbox place in the complex where I work so I will just give it to him and pray.
Have fun
Craig

Thanks all, I suspected it was going to be a real issue. It has just on 250K and my regular mechanic said between 5 and 1500 depending on just what needs doing.

Andy, the bearings are probably the culpret, try vmx-m it will help alot, i would also look for a later model gearbox to rebuild and fit...as the later ones were heaps better. There have been a few for sale on ebay lately....look under landcruiser or 80 series

My 94 model standard does it from 3rd to 2nd, syncro appears to be the culprit, and I too am putting off the rebuild lol
