Apologies in advance for the inane nature of this post but I'm quite pleased with my application of some bush ingenuity to a domestic problem. Sewage blocked on a Sunday which means no (or very expensive) plumber. Decided to stick the fire fighting pump down the drain and blast away the blockage. Very bad idea! Spent the next hour cleaning up the raw sewage that flooded the laundry and bathroom. Only way I could get the crap level down was to stick the intake hose of the fire pump down the shower drain and suck it out on to the garden.

Now I'm covered in waste water and pee'd off that I can't have a shower because the drain is still blocked. Its cold here after all that global warming that caused flooding across in SA so didn't really want to hose myself down outside. I decided to boil a pot of water for a sponge bath. Got the gas cooktop going on the patio and while waiting for the water to boil I was overcome by the obvious. I coiled the garden hose into the pot - eight or so coils. Waited for the water to boil then had a perfectly hot shower. Controlled the temperature by increasing or decreasing the flow.

Happy to post some picks if someone can tell me how to do it.

Haven't the evidence that you repeatedly abuse yourself like cutting fingers of both hands, tendons, trying to saw through lead acid batteries and the like Steve. Bonz is a good butt for the jokes too. Think he enjoys a healthy reputation ;-)

If it is only a pipe blockage and not a septic tank over-fill, fill up either a bath or a couple of laundry trooughs and let the water go. The idea being to create a pressure flow down the pipe. Worked for me many times. Is usuually the first thing the plumber recommends - before even making a house call. I appreciate that there are water restrictions at the mooment, the other alternative is to call the plumber in the first instance and don't 'mess' with it.

A lot of blocked drains are caused by tree roots and you might be surprised from how far away they come to squeeze those fine roots into the pipe. The last problem I had was an inspection opening on a y junction. They used to cement the biscuit in but I replaced this one with an old saucer and used silicon to seal and stop the moisture and thus the roots. That was a couple of years ago.

If you have a septic tank system you might be up for a pump out. I used to have a soak well that would no soak and I used to pump out onto the garden until the sewerage came along at last and I could connect.

Brownie jobs, yuck.

Oh dear. Reminds me of my many many DIY repairs and disasters. LOL
When we first moved here (into a new house) the toilet waste went into trenches. Then we installed a pool. Nobody told me where the trenches ended up. But we found out ! Then I (being a good lil greeny and environmental warrier...I thought at the time) planed a palm tree (wrong kind...of course). The sod grew and grew and grew until the sewage backed up in a downpour(sorry..its raining...cant use the loo) and bubbled out into the front yard (where you needed 4wd ).
I rebuilt the trenches a few times but....well...
Now we have an enviro cycle thingy (after the cost of a small car and plumber stuffing the grounds up..but thats another story)
The thing sprinkles so successfully that I have to mow a small jungle on the side of a hill where there was once just beautiful mow less nothing.
But all the loos now work whatever the weather. Of course with the new loo complete, the last child left home so the load is considerably less (Children + friends + visitors etc...even the new fridge works better )
Every so often a little man jumps out of a van to service this thing which looks like a small spaceship in the front yard.
If only he could fix the sinking pool path......there's no way I'm doing any more DIY .

what a coincidence, we had a loo block too, fortunately we have another, looks like a septic pump out for the plumber to do.

We had a blockage at the Go-Kart track a few years ago, due to lack of use over the summer break. Septic System.

Our plumber club member lifted the top off the tank (after we found it - muggins had the shovel and dug the exploratory trench) and found it crusted solid at the top. This was causing the new schmidt to not go anywhere and back up like yours.

It took a few hits with the crowbar to crack the crust and then we had it pumped out.
