Today I drove a new Hilux diesel 4x4. It belongs to the University mob who are doing some research work here
1. It's all round ground clearance for a 4by seems very low compared to my GQ
2. It does not have Free Wheeling Hubs and by all accounts it does not have constant all wheel drive.
So what is this? Is it back to the future 1970's style?
It is nice to drive but it won't last on rough station tracks as its too low and will get many dints!
Cheers

Yeah but at least the Patrol has a manual override tool to lock hubs if there is a problem

AFAIK, creature comforts and driveability are often the enemy of serious 4wd design.
The 100 series without a solid front axle is a case in point.
Look good, drive
well and cost a fortune. But serious 4wd ?
The Rangie used to be a great compromise. Not sure about the modern ones, but I do know their price...ouch !
Don't worry Willem, just keep filling the old girl up and smiling. The new ones might be nice for the uni guys, but there's no way they're going to follow in many of your tracks.

seat in the patrol allows the fridge to face north south, wont the engle fit north south...leaves a
seat for rear passenger if required.

Hi Rick...
You mean which bank has robbed me... lol...
The rear seats are removed and a flat board on two pieces of 75mm pine are bolted to the anchor points on the floor where the
seat bolts came from...
Leaves a bit of room for things under the fridge...
Hi pepper2,,,
Whe i go away i always have two fridges on that board and a table tucks neatly away behind them against the cargo barrier...

Matt, the short story is that we came across this Paj that had rolled 10kms South of Moomba on the Strz Track where it had rained the night before. Very slippery spot as we saw a Troopy nearly spin that came in to look. Just a localised rain.
The Paj had lots its right rear spring after roll 3 and the shocker broke. I helped the guy by jacking it up and getting the spring back in getting two tyres inflated and sort of drivable. The back axle had shifted sideways enough to get the rear shaft rubbing on the exhaust. It ended up easier to pull the exhaust sideways to allow him to proceed crab fashion actually but we had a go. It had no front or rear screen and the couple were all shook up you may say. We watered and fed em too before proceeding.
The newlyweds of three days marriage are now friends and reckon they owe us some accommodation when we pass through
Echuca. They now have a babe and of course are made of stern stuff and still married.
We escorted them to the Moomba security
gate and spent time there with them and we were all told their 4by would be off to
Adelaide next morning by truck. They would be off to
Adelaide by that afternoons plane at 3.30. Great Support from Santos actually. Thanks Santos, actually we told them we had shares so appreciated the support for our new
young friends

I am assuming it is simular to the tritons at work. Yep they are low. They have auto locking hubs. Strangely enough the ride is like riding a buckingcamel and in is own way is even worse than a cart sprung 75 cruiser
BTW my missus previos model 04 hilux was in the driveway alongside my 80 and it Killed the 80 for clearence even with 15x9.5 tyres!!

So the hubs are free until you shift the gear lever to H4?
Does this activiate the hubs electronically?
It didn't work on the 1980's Pajeros as when you reversed the bloody hubs unlocked themselves.
Maybe it is a different system
The once unbreakable HiLux is now a pussycat

yea you chuck it into 4wd and the hubs lock (spposdly)
Dont know if you saw the post but my missus told me hers auto locked so we took it down the powerlines track (mundaring) and it couldnt get past go. After much head scratching and manuel reading I flicked a tab on the after market wheels ............... revealing perfectly operating MANUEL hubs.
Stuff getting a hick whose dad owns a brewry I got one with a Turbo diesal Hilux which had never been off the bitumen!!

They dont have any means for disconecting them , the front diff drives all the time just like a 70,s hilux or very old cruiser . very poor way of doing it .
