we have been trying to locate a
hand pump for vacuum sealing food here in
adelaide but have been told they are no longer made. so i was wondering if any one knows if they can still be purchase in australia ?
i know the last time i saw one was my mothers, the shops say they could sell heaps if they could get them. the only ones we have found are the danos direct one for $289.00 but that is a powered heat sealer as
well. the hand ones were made of a plastic and were told that they sold for about $5.00 3 years ago. they were excellent.
so any one able to help???

Whale we have two of the Danos direct units due to the large amount of dehydrating packaging we do for bus tours. I insisted they buy two due to the usual quality sold by mail order companies. No problems so far and the unit performs
well. Have not opened the second unit for operation but have tested it to make sure it works.
If only people knew how
well dehydrating and vacuum packaging works. Never have seen a hand unit.

Whale must be all of 3 years.
You cannot suck the air out manually (by mouth) and tie a knot in it to be satisfactory for dehydrating. You need a proper vacuum pump and heat sealer for long term use.
Dehydrating your own tucker can be a real enjoyable experience. You can put the herbs and spices on before or after you dehydrate depending on what it is. Even meat is very successful to dehydrate. Dehydrating is a whole new experience that can save you a lot of money and you can make real healthy wholesome enjoyable tucker. Besides being a bus chef I enjoy cooking and dehydrating and it is like a hobby to us. I am not like a lot of chefs that do not enjoy their own food. I love eating good tasty healthy food and a glass of red.

Whale, I use the barrel of a biro, suck the air out, quickly twirl the package around to keep the air from going back in and tie a knot.
Done it for years, costs nothing and works
well.
Hope that saves a few dollars.

Hills Trading on Stirling Road,
Port Augusta has about half a dozen of the plastic hand vacuum pumps for sale. Saw them there about 4 weeks ago. New and still in their boxes (Been sitting there for a while though by the looks) and were selling for between $5 and $10 I think.
