hi to all, am heading to cape york jun jul this year, around the bottom of the gulf, and want to find out if its worth going into Kowanyama and is there anything there i.e. fishing etc. Or should we cross the Mitchell river and go onto Musgrave if we can?

The Mitchell River crossing may be a little tricky from Kowanyama back to the crossover road at that time of year,, we looked at it Last July and didnt really feel game enough to cross it and it didnt seem that deep,,,,,,, just thick soft sand....
Worse than the sand in the Coen River crossing at Coen...
Thats just my opinion,,,, we stood at the edge of it and pondered it for quite a while,,, we didnt want to walk it because it didnt look very inviting....
So we camped on the southern side of it........
The river bed is about 400metres wide at that spot,,, widest river i have ever seen,,,, the water was about 50metres across...

Decisions, decisions.... Good Luck..

You were wise not to try it - we heard from others at Musgrave that there were a couple of vehicles stranded in the middle. That was in early august 06.

Brian,
Our group did the cape trip last year in Jun-Aug. We went through Pormpuraaw (stayed here great sites on the beach) & Kowanyama on the way from Weipa to Karumba. We crossed the Mitchell-Alice rivers no dramas, the two Pathfinders & Pajero with us go through no worries. One of the guys did walk the rivers though (no crocs -thank @#&*) and we watched a local cross the Mitchell before we did it, as it has to be crossed in an arc
Do that section of the Cape it is beautiful but observe the alcohol limits. We camped by the Mitchell River & were abused be a white ranger for camping and having a beer and we weren't even on DOGIT land yet (camped 200m from their "border", thought at one stage we would have to show our passports to pass through).
Cheers
Shawn

My mate got bogged in the Mitchell in 2003 in a cruiser with a 6.5 chevvy diesel - that was on the Dunbar->Koolata track ....

thanks for your info guys, we are really looking forward to getting up there and sounds like a fair bit of food for thought. I might have to get my missus to walk across to check the mitchell, (cant really see that happening)
