Its been alongtime since my last post and thought I should tell you all the latest.I have a 1989 Nissan Patrol GQ td42 with a turboglide turbo.I had problem with it overheating last summer trip to Sth Australia whilst towing.I raised the bonnet some two inches nearest the windscreen, installed a snorkel, added more oil to the viscous fan,got it dynoed and the injector pump tested and adjusted. It still overheats when towing. One question I have, what about removing the sound deadening material under the bonnet?I want to mount a intercooler but since the Turboglide turbo sits(mounts) rather high above the exhaust manifold, its making a position for the intercooler difficult.

PS:when I say overheating,The exhaust temp goes up to 580 celcius before I back off on the accelerator. The engine temp climbs a fair bit but has never boiled.

Andrew,

This has been discussed at length many times on this forum and there doesn't appear to be a complete cure.

The TD42 Nissan engine is a great motor, it'll never blow up, but it is an old tech truck engine that is not designed for high speed and constant heavy lugging at good road speeds. I used to own one and I thought the world of it.

I'm sure there'll be others on here shortly that will give you plenty of feedback but don't expect a complete cure 'cos so far, nobody's found one!

I'm sure "Roachie" will be along soon and he spent a fortune trying to solve the prob - to no avail.

Take care,

Bilbo

There is a drain plug on the lower left side of the block, near the exhaust. Remove the plug and flush the block. You wil find a build up of mud in this part of the motor. This can only be remove via this plug. All he best.

Where is your temp gauge sender for the EGT located?

Sounds like basic over fuelling to me, but having said that long slow climbs, EGT's on a stock GQ/GU will rise quite suprisingly.

Why not go with a front mount intercooler instead of over the donk, may save you some problems.

removing the deadener can cause paint bubbling on bonnet - it also keeps the heat off the engine.

I tend to agree with what has been said above, your right foot is your friend regarding the temp issue. The only thing that has helped me and my hot GU is me backing off the loud pedal.
Safari make a front mounted I/Cooler but why not support one of the other blokes off this site that makes intercoolers in Melb?? (I think) awill4x4 is his screen name if someone knows how to get in touch with him and you are in Vic maybe this would work out for you???? (Safari's unit works well from my 1st hand experience)

Good luck if you try to solve the o/heating 4.2, if you find the cure, bottle it and sell it cause you will become VERY rich out of it, there is plenty of us out here looking for a cure LOL!! I have almost 300 thou on mine and it has run hot from week 2 of ownership (when it had 2000km on the dial) so it should still last a long time running the way you describe it IMO.

Cheers, Trevor.

Hi Andy
I have a 95 GQ with a Turbo Glide on it.... towing the trailer will see EGT rise to 500..... 600 if I'm "up it". I wouldn't go over 600 though...

I had temp issues last September, cured it with new radiator, viscous hub and thermostat. I see you have attended the hub, although I had the "add-more-oil" thing years ago and it didn't work for me. Maybe check thermostat? Coming back from Fraser Island yesterday in hot humid SE Qld conditions, my water temp gauge was steady at half way when I was at 110kph and about 400 degC EGT. Backing off the speed to, say 95-100 brought the radiator temp back to about 1/3 (normal) and the EGT to 300. I wouldn't remove the sound deadener, as Truckster says, you'll only peel the paint off the bonnet doing that.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Brian

You say you replaced the radiator.Which one did you go for?.I have also, which I failed to mention in my post, the thermostat so I think that a new radiator is in order.look forward to your response!

Hi Andy..
According to my mechanic, it is a copper/brass 3 pass radiator from Red Devil Radiators.... it cost me about $550 I think from memory. The reason I changed it was due to the plastic bits on the original radiator getting brittle and cracking/breaking etc..... didn't want that happening on a trip somewhere.

Cheers
