OK,
I know this has been discussed but I cannot seem to find the exact answer.
Am I correct to say that performance enhancing chips can only be fitted to a vehicle that is already Turbo charged????
I was considering, if possible, fitting a chip to improve towing and fit the Turbo kit later.
I have been looking at the chips but all info seems to indicate that the chips are designed for Turbo charged vehicles only.

Wrong
They can only be fitted to cars with Computers that allow chipping. But seems more turbo models than non.

Thanks Truckster,
thats what I figured. I beleive that the chip alters injection timing etc so could not understand why having a turbo made a difference.

Toy...some motors are mechanical imjected, and some are electro mechanical, with the former, you use a spanner to adjust them, later you use a computer, or you instruct your cars computer to work differently....if thats a std 1hz 100 series, you have the good old mechanical injection, and i can put more fuel in with the turn of a screw, BUT i cant adjust timing so easily...its set by the pump manufacturer....so if you for instance put on a turbo, you can up the fuel, but not up the timing, and black smokeis one sign of bad or late timing...usually diagnosed as too much fuel. You can advance the whole pump to get it right at the midrange or top end, but then at idle, it will sound like you have a loose crank inside the motor....if it is a factory turbo 100 with an electronic pump, a chip will do it all.....and more....for a nice wad of $100 bills....but you get what you pay for....with a 1hz, your better off putting a turbo and intercooler and 3 inch exhaust on it and enjoy the power...because you wont get much more from any other mods. Some have taken out the 1hz and put in a 80 series factory t/d motor (same block) for less than a safari turbo install after 1hz is sold....

Dozer,
you have hit the nail on the head. Bloody beaudy mate thank you. Yes
mine is a standard 1HZ and my line of thought was to fit a chip (cheaper) and then turbo later....but as you have pointed out....not worth it.
I intend to fit an intercooled Denco with exhaust system so will stick with that, although it will just have to wait a little longer.
Thanks again.

Thats a great option, and the cruiser will be a different beast to drive with that, not to mention it will live a long and healthy life....some want their 1hz to go like a petrol, thats when you get problems....the cost to do as you suggested, will be in the vacinity of 7k A second hand 1hdfte motor from a t/d 100 installed with computers galore is about 12k minus your motor (3-4k) and your in the ball park....
the wrecker that does these in in QLD

If you still wanna give the 1hz a huffer than I'd also suggest fitting a boost compensator if you are going to give the fuel pump a fair tweak so that the fuel injected is referenced to the amount of boost present. So when at idle the fuel amount is basically unchanged but when the turbos wound up there is extra fueling to match the increased air present. This is said to solve the over/under fueling worries with mechanical fuel injection pumps.
For more info you can
check out the january issue of 4wd monthly gold edition/issue thingy booklet on modifications. Talks about turbo installs and most other common modifications.
Are you sure your not fitting the turbo to keep up with all those 4.2 GU's?
(I could hold in a anti-toyota jibe much longer)
