Have been told that there is a vehicular ferry service across Spencer Gulf between the places mentioned. A 10 metre limit for vehicle & van appliea nd the fare is around $160 for car 7 trailer.
Anyone have any info, it may be a good short cut to Pt Lincoln from Canberra...

This service has just commenced in recent times.. Wallaroo to Lucky Bay...3 services each way per day. I don't have the exact prices but from memory was abt $180-200 for a car and trailer one way. Service is still in its infancy so will only improve.

Thanks for that info, I'll do the math & see if there are any savings involved but at that price it's gonna be a lot cheaper to drive the extra 380 km I recon....

Should you choose this option there is accommodation right next door at the Office Beach caravan park or at Macs Villas.

The company is SeaSA (http://www.seasa.com.au/). Were down there on holidays recently and saw a brochure. Noticed that the ferry, logo, company website are almost identical to a Qld Ferry company, Sea Stradbroke (http://www.seastradbroke.com.au) that I travel with regularly.

Fares are on that site, but for a car or 4wd up to 5.5m in length the one way fare is $95... the trip would be a damn side quicker than driving, and if the ferry is like the stradbroke one, there's an air conditioned licensed cafe to sit in to enjoy the ride...

I was at Arno Bay on the weekend and picked up a copy of the latest Eyre Peninsula brochure. There is an advert on the back page for the ferry.

I did pickup a price list but put it back,

From memory the ferry is around $90 a car around $80 for a trailer and $25 per adult.

It would be cheaper to drive I reckon?

The website for the ferry is seasa.com.au

cheers

was going to use the service the other week when we went to Pt Lincoln ...the fee for the 4by was $90.00 and the 13ft tinny on trailer $95.00 also on top of that you have $25.00 per person stuff that drove instead you dont actually save much time by taking the ferry either only about 1 hr.....cheers ......Dave

It seems to be working fine enough for them to be procuring a long-term ferry proposition with drive on drive off (rather than the current reversing in proposition).

Watching all the old timers and dads during school hols trying to reverse rig and van under everyone's watchful gaze does provide free entertainment.

There have been occasions when it doesn't run because of the weather - this can add a lot of time to the trip - interestingly it couldn't run out of Wallaroo when the Highway was cut a week or two ago, so everyone who thought they have a short cut home, found themselves in Wallaroo in peak season - not a van site or bed in sight ;-)

Cheers
Andrew.

Hi Mr Fawlty,
The secret with any information, is local information. If you book and pay for the trip a minimum of 1 week in advance, the fares are half price, providing that you use either the first ferry from Wallaroo, or the last one from Lucky Bay.This is no hear say, it is fact. We will be giving it a go this Friday, as we have a wedding to go to over in Port Lincoln. The trip across takes 2 hours.

There will be a new ferry in action soon, which will be a drive on and drive off, at the moment, you have to reverse on, so you can drive off the other end. The Sailing times have changed, they are leaving 15 minutes earlier than stated.

The ferry that they are using, is the one from Stradbroke Island, and will take 35 vehicles, while the new ferry will be able to take 50 vehicles. We were over to Wallaroo to check it out on the weekend, and it is a very quick turn around time from the time that it lands, loads the new vehicles and departs again, only 15 minutes.

If you want any further information, contact me this time next week and I will let you know first hand what the ferry ride was like.

Cheers

Stephen

My Sister-in-law did the trip a couple of weeks back. Didn't save much time and was more expensive than fuel but MUCH easier than driving all the way round. We drove round a couple of years back (another Sister-in-law lives in Cowell) and it was painful, particularly towards the top, when you could see the other side but it was another hour away!
