Hi all,
I have some troubles engaging 4wd, sometimes.

Background - I have had my 2001 wide track se 3.5lt manual jack for 15 months. It has a push button 4wd selector on the dash and a high/low ratio leaver and auto hubs (I wish it was all manual)

Anyway almost 12 months ago I was down the beach (Albany way) had a great time, came off the beach and had troubles getting it out of 4WD, went forwards backwards kicked the tyres and applied liberal verbal abuse and after 10 min all was well.
Next day went to go into the national park down there and the Bu%^&r would not go in to 4WD (flashing 4wd light), again went through all the antics and gave up after around 20 min.
Took it back to the dealer, and was told they could find nothing wrong. (hate that). anyway tried it out on a little bit of sand all worked ok, and I have been using it at least once per month since with no problems and it took around 6 month to regain confidance in it.

Current Problem - Yesterday had exactly the same problem, went out with a mate that has just bought his first 4WD and wanted to try it out and bingo lots of 4WD flashing lights but would not engage. I am getting the clunck (technical term) when I press the button which I suspect is the front hubs try to lock in. This has always been the case even when working correctly.

Does anyone have a good understanding of how the auto hubs work are they electric?
has anyone else had a similar problem?

Thaks for reading my rant any ideas greatly welcome

Rgds

Ian

Just for starters, do you engage / disengage with the vehicle on a soft surface? Have you tried jacking up one or both front wheels to see if that helps?

Just a thought

Oops, wrong key pressed.

When you push the button on the dash, you should be moving at up to 80kph, and a clutch in the transfer case is brought into play. This clutch will engage at various pressures from 0% to 100% giving giving up to 50% of available drive to the front diff (hence 50% front, 50% rear). In addition to the transfer case clutch being engaged, a clutch on the left front axle is engaged to lock drive to the front wheels.
There are no hubs that lock in. When you go into low range, the clutch is locked in place by a ring gear and there is no variation in % drive to the front, you get 50% front, 50% rear and low ratio.

The problems that can occur are -

1) The transfer case solenoid does not engage and the clutches therefore don't work. You will have flashing dash indicator. Repair might involve replacing the solenoid which unfortunately involves removing the Gearbox. I know this because mine was done under warranty - apparently the solenoid comes out via the top and/or the wiring loom is impossible to release with the gearbox in place. Mine's auto - I'm not sure if the same applies to a manual.

If this is the fault, the front clutch won't attempt to engage, so you will have 2wd only, even in low range.

2) The front axle clutch doesn't engage - again you will have flashing indicator. This is both vacuum and electrically operated so a good check and clean will mostly overcome a problem in this area. If this doesn't engage, you will also only have 2wd, even in low range.

3) You may have got the TOD computer wet - it's under the drivers seat and is not sealed - remove it and give all the connectors a good blast with electrical contact cleaner and re-assemble.

If you are not moving when you press the button, the front axle cannot engage its spline - from memory, the system tries about 3 times per second for 5 or 6 seconds befoe it gives up trying to engage and will also set the indicator flashing.

Of interest also is the fact that when all this is engaged, the front axle clutch will disengage if the front wheels are near to full lock to prevent damage to CV joints.

The system is by Borg Warner, and is fitted to a number of other makes as well as Jackaroo. Needs to have ABS to work, as the TOD front wheel slip sensing is done by the ABS sensors

Hi Noldi ,
I could be wrong ,but I thought TOD (torque on demand) was only on diesels. I had some trouble at first also, but not any more. I felt that maybe the previous owner had not used 4wd very much because the more I used 4wd the easier and quicker it would select now no probs at all.

One other thing ,don't try to disengage 4wd (push button dash) until you have taken it out of 4wd low (lever)...I think I've got that right.
I try to make sure I place no load on transmission while selecting ...that is not accelerating or decelerating and it seems to work perfect. We have 3.5 2003 auto.
Hope this helps.
Cheers Boldjack.

Hi Gerhard/Boldjack, Thanks for the information. Mine has shift on the fly but not TOD. A few people have mentioned the actuators, I'll have a look on the weekend, the problem seems to be intermitant as I went out to the local test spot and it worked everytime. Trouble is it's going to be in the back of my mind every time I use it
Thanks again
