Well been up at Fraser Island for the aussie day long weekend and now have a problem. Wanted to ask here first before taking it to the mechanics !! lol ....
It is a 1997 auto gxl prado...
PROBLEM................
Was changing from High Low back to High High and that was fine light went off and with abit of luck it disengaged. problem now is it is stuck in high high and i can not change to high low or neutral or low. transfer shifter will not move.
Has anyone experienced this with their car? and if so how did you fix it ? Thought it may have jumped out of the selector but don't know anything about touching it.
Any help would be GREAT. before i
fork out $$$ to get it fixed.
Many thanks Chris.

Chris,
First off it is not High low but High Lock, 4WD high range and High High is 2H, 2WD high range.
The transfer from high 4wd to low 4wd and back again, the transmission should be in neutral but I believe that going from high 2 to high 4 can be done on the move. The wheels should be straight and the vehicle should not be accelerating.
If you have been driving on the bitumen and the vehicle has not ground to a halt then you are in 2wd. If the vehicle has been slowing and getting harder to drive then you are in 4wd. Stop the vehicle, jack up any front wheel and the wheel should spin. Don't lift the back because the vehicle could move of the jack if the LSD kicks in.
You cold also try turning the motor off and then selecting low 4, with the transmission in neutral or park. Then start the vehicle and see if low range is selected.
Your problem could be electrical or a selector problem. You would be better off seeing a good 4WD mechanic if you can not fix it through the
forum.

Hi Wayne,
Chris's GXL Prado is a full-time 4wd. It has a mechanical transfer lever.
Transfer positions are:
H = 4wd High with centre diff unlocked.
HL = 4wd High with centre diff locked
N and
LL = 4wd Low with centre diff locked.
The fact that the dash light has gone out means the centre diff has unlocked itself, and Chris's problem is that he can't get it back into any position other than H.
It is a known problem with the Prados - the transfer lever needs to be fixed.

Hi Crykies,
The problem with the lever stuck in High happens occasionally on some 90 series Prados. I have had it happen on
mine.
What happens is that the selector lever comes out of the detent spring (S Shaped) and allows the selector rings to rotate out of alignment.
It appears to happen if the transfer case has been working hard (hot).
The fix is relatively straight forward. From inside the car, the interior trim over the gear lever is taken of, along with the lever locking plate on the transfer case. The selector ring is rotated to bring it back into alignment, and it is all put back together.
It is only about an hours work.
It is OK to drive the car until you get it fixed, no damage will be done to the transmission.
Cheers,
Mal
