Looking at getting a 27mg radio as some of our group still use them as a second unit after the UHF -- question is are the Uniden PC122 any good ?
Thanks in Advance

Hi Ella
Have a few of those , they are very good for SSB but I would not reccomend them for the standard AM use. This is because they have to sharp an If amp and this results in a bassy sound, resulting in less than optimum reception.

Hi Doug
I have noted you have had that opinion from other posts, in this case though there is a specific technical reason for its below average performance.
It is because when switching modes a much sharper filter should be used on SSB however they appear to have not done this an used a compromise filter which gives a quite pronounced and measurable, muffled sound on normal AM mode.
This radio also has its audio IC mounted to the side of the case with pins going into the circuit board. Have repaired two because of cracking where pins go into board. Vibration causes problem.
This type of failure can be apparent by holding the radio case and giving it a little sideways twist whilst switched on, and listening for audio to stop.

Hi Doug,
I used to have a GME UHF (I think it was a TX3400 with detachable head) and now I have a Uniden UH-015SX. My mate and I were out
Lithgow way all weekend and he runs the same Uniden radio and we never had a problem with sound quality. I can't say I find it any worse or any better than my previous GME.

I can only go by my own experiences with what I hear through my radio , it's not a problem with my radio because all GMEs and Icoms sound really clear, Though I have a a few Truckies and other pilots I work with nitice the same thing and get same results when they encounter a Uniden user, People can holler and scream about what's best and what's not all they like , i go by my experience over the last 32 years since I first had a Realistic 23 channel AM set from Tandy ,And might I add i treat GPS' the same, all I ever used has been Garmins , and if you find that biased grab a Navman and see if the
border track from Bordertown to the Sturt Hwy is on it.

I used my PC122XL for some years - was a good all rounder - had very long legs under favourable conditions, in the SSB mode - for convoy work in AM mode (our mates all had 27 as
well as UHF) it was good too. But I now use long distance HF and UHF only - recently took it out of the chariot to free up some dash space. I have it for sale if that is of any interest to you). homepages.picknowl.com.au/darian/
