I have picked up one of the cheap Ericsson 290 sat phones and downloaded the manual. I know that they have a history of charging and battery problems.
When I charge it on the mains charger the light on top flashes green (not steady red as it states in the manual). It continues flashing no matter how long it is on charge. The battery indicator shows it is filling but when I disconnect the charger there is never more than three bars on the battery symbol. The charger that came with it is an Ericsson Type: 402 0036-BV B. The battery is an Ericsson Li-Ion 7.4V 1050mAh.

Is this normal for this phone?
Is this the correct charger?
Any tips on getting a better battery life?

I picked up a pair of batteries on Ebay for mine for $90.

If the battery is left in the phone, even turned off, it goes flat in 2-3 days.. with the battery out, it holds its charge.

Not sure on the charging lights etc I can check this on mine tonight for you if you like.

If you could let me know about the lights, at least I'll get an idea if my charger is doing the right thing. Thanks.

The light on mine flasehes orange (not red) when charging and then continues to flash when the battery is full. I suggest you get a couple of new batteries. When you use the phone, have it connected to 12v if you can.

I too have a phone that flashes Green. has not been a problem on either 240volt or 12 volt. Recall reading some where this is normal for some batches.
Holding charge does seem to be better "off" phone. Otherwise works very well. My family trained to send SMS messages which we pick up around camp in evening.
