G'day Aussie,
I don't think I'd be mounting the 240v charger under the bonnet, as the conditions it would be subjected to there (ie: extreme heat and possibly water etc) would do it no good at all.
However, I think you've seen my 3 stage charger set-up and there is no reason why you couldn't set-up something similar inside your Patrol and then run a pair of 6mm cables through the firewall and hook them to the battery.
The 240v cabling needs to be
well shielded (I use garden hose) to get it from the "INLET" socket to the charger; with a circuit breaker as close as possible to the INLET socket.
Cheers mate

I reckon that a certain sponsors page will tell you some good ones mate I can see it to the right if here now. That aside I tend to agree with Roachie though about mounting under the bonnet. How about up high in th rear?
Good to see you around again mate too........

Hi warren,
Yes its way too long mate what ya bin up too???, as if I need to ask, and oh yes your older than us now tooooooo arent you ! LOL
I have a 12A jaycar 3 stage ( $99) charger mounted up in the back and it is hard wired into the 12v system and all i do is run a lead into back each night and plug it in and away it goes.
Need to come up with a fulproof method of not forgetting to unplug it when you drive off ahhaha, looks funny when someone else is driving down the road in ya rig with 30m of flex waving behind.
Cheers Pesty

Hi Pesty we are looking at getting the jaycar charger to recharge the dual batt in the car and one on the camper that we link together with a anderson plug extension lead.
How do you find the charging rate, as in time wise because we have an 80w panel which is fine when the sun is out but the when we use the generator connected to our eagle out back it has an inbuilt 12v charger but is only a trickle charge and can take all day plus to charge so will this bring our charge time down? normally we are around 12.00v after the nights use and are running 2x exide extreme 80amp
cheers

Hi Timewaster
We checked it the other day when we put it on after the night drain, and it was putting out 12.2amps, and about 4 hrs later 8.1amps, with fridge still running in hot weather.
It regulates down the longer its on so running all day is best, but usually 4-6 hrs, tank full of juice in genny, is enough.
I try to keep it above 12.2 v rearly below 12v
If you wont more, quicker, the 25 amp jobbies will be better, but are $300 or more.
I find this little unit great for the money.
I put it on every night as my fridge is a 24/7 affair.
Cheers Pesty

Not necessarilly the best , but REPCO stock a smart charger which is designed to be permanently mounted . If my memory is correct , the suggested mounting position is under the battery . Probably worthwhile to read the info on the box to see if it suits .

Hi Aussichef
The Ctek XS7000 is compact and can be mounted under the dash or under a
seat.
Perhaps place it under the drivers
seat where you can see it as you climb in.
They are quite waterproof so water crossings won't damage it unless you down the 4wd.
I would not mount a charger under the bonnet.
Regards
Derek.

Derek,
I am looking for a solution for our camper. It will soon have 2 Fullriver 120 AH batteries. I want a device that will allow these to be smart charged by either current from the vehicle alternator (when running) or from 240 genny/mains power (when available). I want this device to be fully automatic in that it senses available power from either DC or AC and then proceeds to smart charge the batteries (bulk/float etc).
There seem to be hundreds of types of chargers/inverters/dc converters and things but I cannot find what I want.
If this cannot be done in a single device then what is the best setup to achieve what I want - being smart charging of battery bank from either 12-14v dc or 240v ac (priority to ac whan available).
Based on battery bank of 240AH I would be wanting something with charging output of around 25-40 amps?
Cheers
Muddy
