Am looking for a kitchen set up to put on the back of ute, was chasing any thoughts or leads on where to look. Have looked at Drifta but was just trying to get a look at as many options as possible

Cheers and Beers

Hi Claudie, I have a drifta and love it. I made a box for the back of the patrol and it just slides in. I guess one of the camper trailer ones may do the job for you.

Drifta , AFAIK , are the only real commercially available "add on" kitchens.

I spent a fair amount of time researching them when I built mine. The only other ones I located were US.

Probably best alternative is browse throught the CT websites , and see what Kitchens they use. I know a lot are actually using Drifta Kitchens, and a lot that dont use their own versions.

Other then Wooden Kitchens , you have the more upmarket Stainless Steel ones , but they seem to be made by the CT makers , I dont know of any commercial builder for them.

Why don't you make your own? I got ideas from drifta and had a look at camping shows before making mine. All up to build mine cost about $250, a lot cheaper than the $800 + you spend on a drifta. Finish may not be as fancy, but it's only for camping after all. It's just as strong and practical though.

If yours will be exposed on the back of the ute a metal, enclosed one would probably be better anyway than wood. Wouldn't be too hard to weld up a frame and screw sheet aluminium/steel onto it. Have also heard about Q-B-Block. This aluminium stuff just clips together and is light and strong.

Claudie,

From all my looking around, Drifta does appear to be really the best option in my opinion. They have new car back & ute back ones - with the ute one requiring a pvc cover which should be relatively easy to get knocked up. Another coat of laquer would not go astray on the drifta's as well, regardless of which one you end up going for - although I just checked the drfita site - and I assume that the car back one may be marine grade carpeted - a call to drifta would set you straight on that one.

Myself, I will be going drifta, as I have a Jeep Grand Cherro, and also a luggage trailer and will go for a combo of drifta that allows me to go with or without the trailer - ie I can load upo car & trailer, and also leave trailer at a base for a few days and scoot off in the car where not suitable for carrying a trailer - combine with a Thule Spirit Roof Box, it should allow me a great deal of flexibility in loading up and being sufficient independent of having to have the trailer.

I like the flexibility that the Drifta offers in the way of positioning where you want in your camp setup. Personally, I wont make up a copy as there will be enough jigging around that I have to do in any event, so am happy to go with getting the unit from them.

Aint planning and researching and thinking half the fun of it all? I reckon it is, cant beat it.

Cheers
