Wayne,

Do I pick up the vehicle or just cut my losses now and put the $1000 to wards an other vehicle?

That must be going through you head at the moment.

I know where you can get a good Troopie.

Nissan will never be cheapest on a service.

Its pretty common that there are "major" services done on most cars, and they are a $1000 - 2000ish or there abouts. There was one chick on here who got stung by burymyd for $1500ish

most of the time 1/2 th work is not done...

remember though, cheapest is not always worth it.

Wayne, You don't have to go to a dealer to have the service work done and still maintain your warranty.
Any reputable mechanic can do it for you and complete the log book details.
Around here, probably 50% is done by the privateers and there business' are booming. Cost is considerably cheaper, it's not the trainee or work experiance gofer doing it and it's done properly.

Is there some kind of legislation to back you up when something goes wrong and you do need warranty work done?

Des
not too many people wan't to listen, they are all bluffed into thinking I MUST TAKE MY CAR TO THE DEALER OR I VOID MY WARRANTY !

My father & Uncle are both mechanics both have their own workshops and have never once heard or known of any one personally or customers having trouble getting warranty work done

So long as that service book is filled out signed and stamped by the mechanic

I can vouch for what Des says. I bought my Patrol in 2000, brand new. I had the free service done by Nissan and then the vehicle never graced their driveway again. I did all the services myself and recorded in the book. At 80,000klm my 5th gear was shagged and Nissan replaced it under warranty at no cost to me. No questions asked!!! (Note: I work in a bank and have no mechanical qualifications other than spending most of my leisure time flat on my back admiring the undercarriage of that marvellous piece of modern engineering that is known as "The Patrol".....hahaha)

servicing it elsewhere will still give you warranty, but you throw away chances of good will.

i.e., if that gearbox blew @ 101,000, nissan would give you a quote, having it always serviced at the dealer you bought it off, they would probably cover it under goodwill.

a tip i was told, Always ask for the Log book service, not the dealer service. That way you pay less as you aren't paying for the un necessary things the dealer likes to do.

Also, I always question them on a few items, like i noticed before the service the passenger wheel was missing a weight, how much weight did it need to balance? they then get worried as they never rotate let alone check the balance, even if they have it in the service book as a service item...

Recently spoke to a lad who commenced work at a Holden dealership as a lube/oil change boy. That was his job. He progressed eventually coming up from the pit to under the bonnet. He wasn't a qualified tradesman yet dealers still continue to charge top dollar for a service being carried out by 'a boy'. They wonder why the public has stopped buying new vehicles!! Not the petrol price - bet it's something to do with the cost of owning and maintaining a vehicle. Service charges are a good example.

Get out the service book and figure out what you can do yourself then give the stuff you can’t do to the mechanic to tackle, you will save a fair bit of money.

Cheers.

I was a mechanic for a few years and all the services are not carried out due to the books recomendations. To me an 80k service requires a check of the brakes (front and back), plugs, points, give it a grease if it has nipples, change engine oil, all filters, check all other oils, check the front end have a look around underneath, and give the tyres a black. Probably did a little more than that but not much.
I have a hilux that blew the gearbox at 80 000k. I had done all the servicing and toyota just repaired it with no question. They even gave me a loan car for the month it took.

Hey Wayno,

I just had my 80k service done in Perth. I have been going to the Ultratune in Kingsway for my last 3-4 services. He is a top young bloke there with his own franchise and he is helpful and trustworthy. He charged me just $690 for the 80k service, give him a call m8.

Cheers

What for a "PROPER" 80k service with parts?

if I remember correctly, thats inc greasing CV's (not that it ever happens), seals, regrease wheel bearings etc. brakes, all fluids diffs, transfer case, gearbox, engine, + filters, fuel etc etc.. theres $400 in parts, and fluids..

but yes, nearly all of it is labour, INSPECT THIS INSPECT THAT, REMOVE AND CHECK THEM, there is a lot of labour in it, which as said above is usually done by apprentices on $200 a week...

If you can do all that for $400, your already out of business, pay your mechanics Chinese rates of pay, or will be closed soon! :)~

I'd ask for a break down on the costs.

Go and price all the fluids, seals, filters, etc to do the job CORRECTLY...

No, not really dreaming, it would be within 20-30 of the right price.

As Exploder basically said 'do it yourself'. That way you learn about your vehicle. You can't run to a service centre when you're broke down somewhere out bush.

Hi Wayne,

I am no lover of franchise dealers, I believe most of them think our money is "monopoly money" and their responsibility to their customers is cavalier at best.

Having said that, I had my Holden serviced by the dealer and a wheel sensor for ABS failed 4 months out of warranty. $650+for the fix. They took it up with Holden on my behalf and informed me because I had it serviced by Holden Dealer they would and did paid for it. This more than covered the service costs.

Most 80k services are in that range. Ten years ago my work Land Cruiser was $1000 for a service.

Good Luck
