Can anyone assist me with a comments on the value of adding a chip to 1998 Gu 2.8L patrol? What effects does it have on power and economy? Thanks.

I may be wrong but the 2.8 GU was not computer controlled.

Adding a chip is not possible as it is not wired up for one.

Wayne,

Mate, they do make then for the 2.8TDi Patrol as the Fuel Pump is electronically controlled and rather expensive to replace......I had one on my last Patrol, Motsons Enhancer.....

Mate,

I had a Motsons Enhancer fitted to my 2000 model GU 2.8TDi Patrol and it was the best thing I had fitted to that truck. Assisted greatly with the down low power though didn't totally fix that issue but made it far better to drive. Mine was installed by Fremantle Diesel Services. You won't regret it....3in Exhaust also helps a little.....

We are talking about the 1998 model.
Was not there was a change in 2000 and that is when the electronic control came in.

My head is starting to hurt thinking about Nissan's.

Wayne,

No, the 3lt came in 2000. Mine was the very last of the 2.8TDi's and was a Jan 2000. It was/is exactly the same has the 98,99 and 2000 model........I believe Feb/Mar 2000 was when the 3lt came into service.....

Hi T.T.
This is a copy of my reply on a previous post about the same issue, if you wanted to read the whole post it's #36760.

"Hi Andrew and Patrolben,
As Buggalugs has mentioned I have the 2.8 with the motsons, it does still lack the low down grunt and the driveability of the 4.2 for slow off road work, I'm talking around the 800 to 1300 rpm mark while it is still off boost.
The motsons unit has definately given it more down low compared to standard, it was pretty atrocious standard, as an example I can now easily go round intesection type corners in 3rd gear and pull away comfortably from around the 12-1300 rpm, if it's a little lower it just takes a couple of seconds to get to that point and your off. Keeping in mind it does have 4.6 diff gears, so with the extra power this type of manouvre is a lot easier than with the 4.2 which has 3.9 gears.
I also have the 4.2 GU with the dump pipe and exhaust done and a tune-up, haven't had them side by side as yet ( might have to do that test soon, got a spare w/e Trev ? ) but I'm sure the 2.8 would easily stay with, if not pull slightly away from the 4.2 under normal driving conditions.
I bought it off member 'Grungle' who had his dynoed before and after and got an increase of 27% in the kw, and 30% in nm. not sure of the 1300 rpm mark but it definately has quite a bit more there as well.
I don't know how exactly it works, though I'm sure if you give Motsons' a call they would be quite happy to explain it to you, all I know is that in conjunction with the unit the boost is increased to 14.5 lb.ft. and it is far more responsive in the early part of the accelerator.
Certainly no increased oil usage and still get 8km/lt (12.5 lt/ 100 ) 50% town and 50% between 100 and 110kph.
PatrolBen, you mentioned the 'taking off' bit, I can now take off with the 2.8 nearly the same way as I do with the 4.2 ie. no accelerator, just ease the clutch out, albeit slightly ( and I do mean 'slightly' ) slower in the 2.8, and once out can accelerate smoothly away from there, no way could I do that previously.
I would highly recommend the unit for anyone with the 2.8, it makes it far, far more drivable around town and IMO the best value for money enhancement for towing, overtaking etc.
Mine also has 250000k's up and is still going well.
Hope all this helps. "

There is also some more info in post 37958.

TT

I have '98 2.8 GU. Fitted a Steinbauer chip last May. Quite happy with improvement so far. Goodish driveability from 1100rpm. Fuel use much the same as before but also did pump and injectors at same time, as well as 2 1/2" exhaust. Also had quite noticeable improvement from opening restriction in the elbow between air-filter and airflow meter.

These units are adjustable.

Sorry about late reply but in NZ at present and not much pootr access. Feel free to ask questions.

Good luck,
