Jimbo (WA)
G'day all,
I have a specific question relating to this trek that I'm hoping someone who has travelled it recently can help with.
i intend travelling this in Aug this year with two hilux's. We are
well set up with comms, recovery and all the usual stuff, and i am
well versed in remote travel.
My question is: Am I likely to have any ground clearance issues with two hilux's with after market susupension that is about 30mm - 40mm above standard and 31" tyres?. these vehicles have travelled the CSR and other
treks without problems.
Thanks in advance for any info,

Yeah. read that Richard. Thanks anyway. From the amount of times your moniker crops up on this site - it must be one of the very few tracks you HAVEN'T travelled!

You'll have no worries Jimbo. I was there last year and will be doing the David
Carnegie form the south in June. Both it and the
Hunt Oil Road are in much better condition than the gunbarrel (due to less traffic). Enjoy the trip.

Jimbo
Its an easy run, done mostly in 2wd and even beyond the Gunbarrel up the
Eagle Hwy as
well.
There is a
good campsite in the Mulga trees on the right about 2km north of
Empress Spring (which was dry in June 06).
I must've been just ahead or behind Mick...lol
Some pesky camels wouldn't get off the track for some kilometres just jogging ahead of us. I managed to squeeze past eventually.
Cheers

Thanks Willem - it's always good to get a heads-up on conditions, particularly good camping spots. And on that topic - a bit of info I just read yesterday in the latest VKS737 "Network News" says that
Lorna Glen station is being caretaken (caretooked?) by a
John and Jean Mack (Whiskey 68) on behalf of DEC - the old CALM.
This station is 160km NE of
Wiluna and is accessable from
Wiluna or the Gunbarrel near
Carnegie.
It costs $5 per night for camoing and showers etc. They have issued a general invitation for VKS members to "drop in".
Sounds great, and I intend to call in on the way
home after completing the David
Carnegie Rd.
Thanks again everyone for the info.

G'day Jim
Lucky bugger, I'll get to do the trip one day. I reckon
Carnegie must have been a pretty special sort of bloke.
A really good link to a retracing expidition a couple of years ago by Alan McCall www.eftel.com/~equinox/ A good read, and may be helpful to you.
Gus Luck, who taught
Carnegie a lot of the bush skills also has a good book called
Outback Trail. $22.00 at Hesperian Press www.hesperianpress.com
good luck

Thanks Waz,
I like to take that sort of info along as trip notes so that at the appropriate time one of our navigators can blast it out over the UHF to all. It helps hearing and reading about that stuff when you're actually there and really adds depth to the trip I reckon. I have printed that link off for my trip - thanks again,

Hi Jimbo,
I am planning to be doing the Gunbarrel in August so had a look at the map to find '
Lorna Glen'. It seems to be a long way around from
Carnegie, do you know if there is anything different / unique about the country on that route ? Or, can you reach
Lorna Glen direct from the Gunbarrel without doing the big detour ?

KK,
I haven't been there (Gunbarrel), but my topo map indicates a track heading west 21km south of Wongawol, almost exactly opposite a track heading east to Windidda Station.
The blurb from the VKS Network News says:
"........ You can also come down from the north - off the
Granite Peak Road or from the Gunbarrel Hwy on the Wongawol Road from the east."
Feel free to email me for a copy of the article (3/4 A4 page) including contact details.
