Just found a photo of the Simpson Desert Crossing that I did in October last year.

The track were just about blown away.

Hi Wayne,
We have come across the same a couple of times like that in the mighty Simpson.
Not much fun setting up camp in it. I find next morning the worst, grit in your eyes, hair feels like straw, and grit in the swag.

Well it is all part of seeing the many sides that the Simpson has to offer, and we still keep going back.

Cheers

Stephen

G'day Wayne,

We also copped a stiff breeze whwn we there in Sept 2005. No dust though where we were camped but the winds were in excess of 30 knots. The next day all the tracks looked like they had never seen traffic.

Kind regards

When I bought my first 4wd a guy at work said "What do you want that for? I just fly to everywhere worth seeing."

My reply was, "If you are not spitting the dust out from between your teeth you haven't really been there!"

I guess that means you have now Really been to the Simpson.

Many people on this site often ask what the conditions are like in the Simpson & it's difficult to convince them how hard it can get, particually when towing trailers & all it takes is one sand storm like in your photo to make the going very challenging, often adding an extra day & 50 litres to the fuel consumption. Early or late in the season the track often gets blown out but is certainly possible all year & travellers should be prepared. Great photo Wayne.

Hi Wayne,
Thanks for the great photo, very graphic example of the challenges.

Quick question, when's your favoured time of year for a Simpson crossing?

Geoff,

Any time is a good time to cross the Simpson, and when you have to go, you have to go regardless of the time of year.

I tend to like the July crossing. Not too hot and less flies.
