I am aware I can use a Telstra GSM sim card with international roaming in a Motorola Iridium. I want to know if all the same
services are provided, SMS messages, voice mail etc... Can anyone advise me?

Depends on the actual model of the phone, our 9500 can't send SMS but can receive them, the later 9505 can send and receive SMS.
The voicemail works as does diversions.

I went through this a few months back. Got a Telstra GSM roaming-enabled card on a $10/month plan in a Motorola 9500 Iridium sat phone.
I cannot receive SMS messages on the phone (the 9500 cannot send them regardless of the plan). Trying to get details from Telstra about the
services and charges is impossible - each time I asked I got a different answer. But the bottom line is that it appears that you can only receive SMS messages if you are on a proper Satphone type plan (rather than the international roaming). Certainly none of the SMSes I sent were received.
As to the call costs, the best they could say was "try a few calls and see what they charge you". So I made a couple of calls to myself (send and receive). Coincidently I received the bill today - $3.85 for 1 call of 1:00 minute. I made the call late November. I believe it costs to receive calls too, but there isn't anything on the bill that I can see.
Hope this helps.
